Royal Ascot Day 3 Tips - Thursday 16th June
Race 1 - Norfolk Stakes Tips
Michael Bell has only had three runners in the Norfolk Stakes this century. 20/1 shot Nevisian Lad finished a very good third in 2003 and Hoh Mike placed second to a future two-time Group One winner, Dutch Art three years later. Bell's most recent runner in this Group Two was The Lir Jet, who ran down Golden Pal to win from stall one two years ago.
Bell will only run a juvenile in this sprint if he thinks they have a strong chance of winning, so I'll take a chance on BRAVE NATION, by first-season sire Sioux Nation, who won the Norfolk for Aidan O'Brien in 2017.
Brave Nation pulled himself into an early lead on debut at Doncaster and sprinted six lengths clear of his rivals on the run to the line. The second that day has run well in defeat since and the third won next time out, and James Doyle's mount beat them very, very easily. 9/1 is too tempting to turn down.
Race 2 - King George V Stakes Tips
It's been 20 years since a horse carried more than 9-01 to victory in this lucrative handicap. That being said, the weights for this year's renewal are so condensed, that only three of the 19 runners will carry less than 9-1, so it's highly likely we'll see that trend broken on Thursday.
A wide draw is often advantageous over 12 furlongs on the round course, so I'll take a punt on FRANZ STRAUSS, in the hope that first-time cheek-pieces will help him make a winning handicap debut.
John Gosden's colt won on his only two-year-old start and kicked off this season with a fourth-place finish in the Classic Trial at Sandown. Benoit De La Sayette then took the ride at Nottingham, where Franz Strauss hung badly left under pressure and could only keep on to finish third. Frankie Dettori's mount now makes his handicap debut off a workable mark of 92 and he's bred to improve for this step up in trip.
Race 3 - Ribblesdale Stakes Tips
I'm a big fan of SEA SILK ROAD, who powered to a hugely impressive maiden win at Nottingham on her three-year-old reappearance.
William Haggas' filly was then heavily backed prior to the Height Of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood, but found herself stuck behind a wall of runners turning for home. Tom Marquand nursed his mount into contention and Sea Silk Road kept on gamely to beat a 102-Godolphin filly by half-a-length.
Stepping up to 12 furlongs will certainly suit this daughter of Sea The Stars, as will the quicker ground she'll face at Royal Ascot. Tom Marquand's mount should take plenty of beating.

Race 5 - Britannia Stakes Tips
A quick look through the last 20 runnings of the Britannia will tell you that the stand's rail is the place to be. All of the first eight in the betting have been drawn in stall 14 or wider, including three-time winners King Of Time, Wanees and Yonafis, and the unbeaten Whoputfiftyinyou - who sealed a four-timer by beating St James's Palace Stakes fifth, Mighty Ulysees at Haydock last time out.
William Buick has chosen to ride market leader, King Of Time. Personally, I prefer the chances of Appleby's second-string TRANQUIL NIGHT, who made his handicap debut at the Craven Meeting on the back of two impressive novice wins at Kempton.
Tranquil Night settled nicely that day, moving smoothly into contention coming out of the dip before surging clear to seal a four-length win. The runner-up, Outgate is now rated 98 after two impressive wins. The third, fourth, eighth and ninth-placed horses from that handicap have also come out and won, so you have to mark up Tranquil Night's win considerably.
James Doyle's mount is drawn perfectly in stall 30, with King Of Time and Whoputfiftyinyou on his immediate inside. An eleven-pound rise shouldn't stop Tranquil Night from mounting a strong challenge.
Given the size of the field and the number of places on offer, I'm also going to back SPINAROUND, drawn two stalls outside our first selection in gate 32.
John Gosden's colt seemed to relish fast ground at Newmarket last season, where he saw off an odds-on Godolphin favourite to shake off his maiden tag. Frankie Dettori travelled to Chelmsford to take the ride this son of Kodiac in the Platinum Jubilee Handicap last time out, where Spinaround travelled powerfully behind the leaders and needed little encouragement to put that race to bed.
A six pounds rise for such a dominant win doesn't seem too harsh. Spinaround is clearly still on the upgrade and returning to fast turf should certainly suit.
Race 6 - Hampton Court Stakes Tips
REACH FOR THE MOON is now the odds-on favourite to hand Her Majesty, The Queen another Royal Ascot winner and the case for the favourite winning is extremely strong.
A leading juvenile last year, Reach For The Moon only made his comeback in the Heron Stakes last month. John Gosden warned the public that his returning star would need the run and Reach For The Moon drifted markedly in the build-up to the race. My Prospero - third in Tuesday's St James's Palace Stakes - ran out a ready winner, but Frankie Dettori's mount did himself justice by finishing a one-length second.
Dettori will be desperate to ride a Royal winner for The Queen, in the year of her Platinum Jubilee. Reach For The Moon is very hard to oppose.
Race 7 - Buckingham Palace Stakes Tips
Those looking to back clear favourite Montassib should know that market leaders have a poor record in this race, with fourth the best any favourite has ever managed. Like many of the handicaps run on the straight track, a low draw is far from ideal in the Buckingham Palace, so being drawn in stall one is another clear negative against Montassib's chances.
Since this handicap returned to the schedule in 2020, four-year-olds have been dominant, occupying the first three places in both of the last two years. Vafortino bids to complete a famous double after winning the Victoria Cup. Fellow four-year-old, STAR OF ORION kept on well from a low draw to place eighth that day and he could be worth siding with at a much longer price.
After finishing out the back on his reappearance in the Britannia last season, Ralph Beckett's gelding beat Twaasol off a mark of 94 at Newmarket. Star Of Orion was then narrowly beaten in the International Stakes Handicap held here at Ascot in July, losing out to hot-favourite Danyah by a short-head.
Results dipped after that agonising defeat, but there were definite signs of a return to form on Star Of Orion's return in the Victoria Cup. Rob Hornby's mount has been dropped a further two pounds for that run and I wouldn't be shocked to see Star Of Orion contend after a much kinder draw in stall 16.
