Two 2000 Guineas winners clashed in the St James's Palace Stakes, with Chaldean narrowly edging Padding in the betting.

French 2000 Guineas runner-up, Isaac Shelby was backed into third-favouritism during the course of the morning. Newmarket third Royal Scotsman was also fairly well-backed, with Cicero's Gift and Mostabshir drifting markedly before the runners were sent on their way.

From an inside berth in stall one, Frankie Dettori decided to make the running on Chaldean. Indestructible moved up to keep Chaldean company, with Paddington and Isaac Shelby sitting in the second rank.

Turning for home, Frankie Dettori pushed Chaldean into a clear lead. Paddington was forced a little wider than ideal rounding the turn, but Ryan Moore was the first to react to Frankie's move and the two 2000 Guineas winners pushed on to fight out the finish.

It was soon evident that Chaldean had little more to give and Paddington swept into a two length lead. Dettori's mount attempted to battle back, but Paddington wasn't for catching and Aidan O'Brien celebrated his second victory on the card.

Charyn kept on from the rear to finish a very good third under David Egan. Nothing else made any inroads in the contest.
