2022 St James's Palace Stakes Entries

Coroebus lowered the colours of stablemate Native Trail to hand Charlie Appleby his first victory in the 2000 Guineas. The favourite was handed a fresh mark of 121 for that Classic success and Coroebus has been installed as the 8/11 favourite to win his second Group One of the season.

William Haggas will throw two promising three-year-olds into the St James's Palace Stakes, with both My Prospero and Maljoom sitting prominently in the market. Shiela Lavery has entered up New Energy, who stayed on well to finish second behind Native Trail in the Irish 2000 Guineas.

Berkshire Shadow, Lusail, Light Infantry and Checkandchallenge renew rivalries with Coroebus, after lengthy defeats in the 2000 Guineas. Frankie Dettori will ride Mighty Ulysees for John Gosden, with Ralph Beckett's Angel Bleu also holding Royal Ascot entries.

Aidan O'Brien has entered up Aikhal, who hasn't been seen since last autumn. Roger Varian's Bayside Boy and Jim Bolger's Wexford Native also feature in the field.

2022 St James's Palace Stakes Tips

Coroebus ran out an impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas, the form of which was boosted by Native Trail's Irish Guineas success. Charlie Appleby's star is entitled to come on for that first start of the season, so it's hard to make any sort of case against the market leader.

That being said, 12 talented colts will line up against Appleby's Classic winner and plenty of them sit at appealing prices. Bet365 will pay out on the first four home too, so there's certainly value to be found betting against Coroebus.

Bayside Boy endured a torrid time from a horrible draw on his return in the French Guineas. That display is easily forgiven and 66/1 is far too big a price for a horse with his ability. Yet, I fear the going may be a little too quick for Bayside Boy, who seems to prefer slower ground, so I'll take a punt on the equally appealing LIGHT INFANTRY at a slightly shorter price.

David Simcock's star was unbeaten at two, following a six-length triumph on debut at Yarmouth with an impressive triumph in the Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury. Light Infantry then made his reappearance in the 2000 Guineas, where things didn't go entirely to plan.

Jamie Spencer's mount was understandably keen on his first outing after a long break. Spencer had always planned to hold his mount up, but with three furlongs to go, a gap started to appear between Light Infantry and the rest of the field. As push came to shove, Spencer was forced to angle towards the inside rail to try and make his challenge. Light Infantry did manage to pick up in the closing stages, crossing the line seven lengths behind Coroebus in ninth.

Inexperience was the contributing factor behind that bizarre performance. Light Infantry was also very fractious in the paddock ahead of that Classic, which might explain the sluggish start he made to the contest.

There's clearly plenty more to come from this extremely talented colt and an improved performance would see Light Infantry challenging for the places behind Coroebus.

Verdict

Light Infantry has the profile of a big improver and, at 33/1, he looks to be the best each-way bet in this Group One.
