We bring you our South African racing tips for Saturday 4th July, as Scottsville stages three historic Group One sprints.

July 4th was originally pencilled in for the Durban July in 2020. Sadly, the Covid-19 outbreak has seen South Africa’s most prominent festival pushed back to July 25th. In it’s place, however, we find three rescheduled Group One sprints, and racegoers at Scottsville this weekend are in for a thrilling afternoon.

I’ve taken a closer look at the fields set to contest the Golden Horse Medallion, the South African Fillies’ Sprint and the Golden Horse Sprint, proving readers with a selection in each race.

2020 Golden Horse Medallion Tips

Over 1200m - six-furlongs to European readers – at Scottsville, the draw often favours horses drawn on either side of the track, with the centre stalls accounting for far fewer winners and placers. The market leaders have all been drawn between 8 and 14, with the exception of Validus down in 2, so I’d be surprised if the winner didn’t come from one of the higher gates.

Tempting Fate and Al Muthana are both unbeaten and come into the Medallion on the back of impressive victories. They have, however, amassed just three starts between them, and it’s hard to read too much into the form of any of their wins.

One who brings solid form and plenty of experience to the table is ERIK THE RED. Having finished fifth on debut back in December, Justin Snaith’s juvenile has racked up four straight victories, beating several rivals he’ll face again on Saturday.

Richard Fourie’s mount held off Joseph Barry to win a Group Three on his final start before the lockdown, and warmed up for his tilt at the Golden Horse Medallion with a bloodless Listed success over this trip. Erik The Red looks to be the one they all have to beat.

2020 South African Fillies’ Sprint Tips

Celtic Sea was a 20/1 shot when she won this race 12 months ago. Sean Tarry’s four-year-old returns to Scottsville on the back of an easy handicap victory under top-weight at Vaal, and looks nicely drawn along with the fancied horses in stall one.

Run Fox Fun has lost just once in seven starts so far during her career, and rivals the defending champion for favouritism. Brett Crawford’s star managed to get the Fabian – who runs in the next – last time out, when giving her male counterpart two kilos at the weights, and Anton Marcus’ mount has to be greatly respected.

Although three-year-olds get a weight-for-age allowance from the elders, it’s only half-a-kilo (2.2llbs), so I doubt it’ll count for that much. That being said, I still think it could be worth taking on the older horses with a three-year-old, and the each-way play here has to be PRETTY YOUNG THING.

After a seventh-place finish in the South African version of the 1000 Guineas in December, Brett Crawford’s filly has notched up two straight wins over shorter trips. Pretty Young Thing followed a lengthy handicap win over seven furlongs with a powerful triumph in Poinsettia Stakes last month, where she looked the winner a long way out and stopped the clock in a very competitive time.

She may be Crawford’s supposed second-string here, but she’s drawn perfectly next to Celtic Sea in stall two and could give each-way backers a real run for their money.

2020 Golden Horse Sprint Tips

This year’s Golden Horse Sprint handicap looks wide open, with 888Sport going 10/3 the field. Top-weight Kasimir heads the current market, despite going down to Bunker Hall in the seven-furlong Drill Hall Stakes on his previous start.

Eden Roc got the better of Invidia, Cartel Captain, Warrior’s Rest and Ultra Magnus to win a Group Two last time out, and all five sit prominently in the market here. Mike de Kock’s Frosted Gold has also come in for support, despite the facts he hasn’t run over this trip for over 11 months.

Sean Tarry, one of the dominant figures in South African horse racing, comes into this race mob-handed. The best of his five runners is CHIMICHURI RUN, who won the highly-lucrative Group One Tsogo Sun Sprint over course-and-distance last May. After a couple of solid recent runs over 1000m, I fancy he could land a second massive prize here at Scottsville.

Chimichuri Run was backed into joint-favouritism for the Group One Computaform Sprint on the dirt at Turffoentein, and only went down by a length. Tarry’s five-year-old is used to carrying big weights on his back in high profile handicaps, and he certainly looks worthy of a punt on his current price of 6/1.
