2020 Optic White Stakes Best Bet – Avilius @ 3.50

Avilius has been beaten in two starts since resuming this campaign, but he’s getting closer to a win.

The James Cummings-trained six-year-old is a 10-time winner from 20 career starts and although slightly disappointing this season, his best efforts are yet to come.

He ran fourth behind Samadoubt in the Group 1 Winx Stakes before making late ground to run second behind Samadoubt again.

That came in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes and although beaten by over three lengths, we were impressed with his late work.

Avilius is nominated for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup, so there are bigger targets in mind. However, he should be primed and ready to fire for the Optic White Stakes at Randwick.

Bookmakers are offering good odds at 3.50 and that’s likely to firm come race day.

2020 Optic White Stakes Best Each Way – Samadoubt @ 5.00

There turn around in form for Samadoubt is quite incredible. The Bjorn Baker-trained runner has scored consecutive wins out of nowhere.

The six-year-old caused a massive upset in the Winx Stakes at Randwick when scoring by a half-length over Happy Clapper.

He paid 41.00 on that occasion and again caused an upset last start in the Chelmsford.

He led throughout to score at double-figure odds and now bookmakers have taken notice. The son of Not a Single Doubt has been a revelation this season and he could remain unbeaten this time in.

Punters have already enjoyed a 127.9% return on income for Samadoubt throughout his career and we’re happy with the 5.00 on offer.

The only negative is if Dreamforce runs in the race. He could put some pressure on Samadoubt up front and tire late, but we’re happy to stick with him.

2020 Optic White Stakes Best Roughie – Youngstar @ 26.00

At first glance, Youngstar has been disappointing for some time now. However, that was a nice run for sixth in the Chelmsford Stakes and she has improvement to come.

The Chris Waller-trained mare has only four wins from 18 starts but she has just needed time to mature as an older horse.

She’s a daughter of High Chaparral which will appreciate the rise in distance and given her most recent run, we’re confident she can improve to run them close.

It will only take a slight improvement in form to see her be competitive on the Group 1 stage once again.

Verdict

Avilius looks the hardest to beat with fitness under his belt. He has finished behind Samadoubt twice this season but has more improvement to come.

Based on recent form, Samadoubt must be included at each-way odds. Youngstar is another value pick as improvement is expected from the Waller-trained mare.
