Fillies' Mile History
The Fillies' Mile is a Group One flat race for the two-year-olds that's ran on Future Champions Day at Newmarket.
Ran annually towards the end of the year, the total prize pool for this event is £567,500.
Created in 1973, the Fillies Mile was originally held at Ascot where it was sponsored by Green Shield who eventually rebranded to Argos, with the racing once known as the Argos Star Fillies’ Mile.
Two years later and it was upgraded to Group Three Status, with sponsorship this time being picked up by Hoover, who continued their association with the race until 1989, by which time the race had been promoted to a Group Two.
1990 saw it then become a Group One, and although the race was temporarily held at Newmarket in 2005, it wasn’t until 2011 that it would call the British HQ its home.
Following that move it was a race that became part of the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting, but switched places in the calendar with the Rockfel Stakes in 2014 and became part of the Future Champions Festival.
Top Irish trainer, Aidan O'Brien saddled the Fillies' Mile winner for three seasons in a row, with Together Forever, Minding and Rhododendron winning between 2014 and 2016. In 2017, fan's favourite Laurens claimed victory for Karl Burke and owner, John Dance. Roger Charlton was celebrating in 2019, as the well-backed Quadrilateral held off Powerful Breeze to win her first Group One at Newmarket.
