The final leg of the US Triple Crown takes place at Belmont Park this weekend, as a field of talented three-year-olds take part in the Belmont Stakes. This historic race was first staged back in 1867 and racing fans can look forward to another thrilling renewal on Saturday.

Leading the way in this Classic betting is last year's top juvenile, Forte. Following two victories in the trials, Todd Pletcher's star was due to carry the tag of favouritism into the Kentucky Derby. That was until Irad Ortiz Jnr's mount picked up a stone bruise during the build-up and was ruled out of the Derby just hours before the off.

Forte will come up against Angel Of Empire, who was backed into favouritism for the Kentucky Derby when the favourite was withdrawn and stayed on from the rear to finish third behind Mage. Tapit Trice, a disappointing seventh in the Derby, steps up in trip and enter his second Classic of the season.

Bob Baffert's National Treasure will try and win his second Triple Crown contest, having held on from the front to win the Preakness Stakes last month. There's then a decent gap in the market until we reach Hit Show, who finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby.

Peter Pan Stakes winner, Arcangelo jumps into Grade One company for the first time. Other Belmont Stakes runners include Red Route One, Tapit Shoes and Il Miracolo.

Connections of Forte were understandably gutted when their star was withdrawn from the Kentucky Derby on veterinary advice. Those feelings of despair would only have increased after watching Mage - who Forte beat cosily in the Florida Derby - claim victory on the Downs.

Given his record, Forte remains the horse to beat. Yet, Todd Pletcher's star isn't bred to be going much further than a mile and his prep for the Belmont Stakes has hardly been ideal.

Angel Of Empire stayed on well in the closing stages when third in the Derby and could enjoy this step up in trip, while the lightly-raced Arcangelo remains open to plenty of improvement. The same can be said for TAPIT TRICE who, out of all of the runners in this field, could improve most for this step up in distance.

Todd Pletcher's star endured a torrid time in the Kentucky Derby. Luis Saez held his mount up in last, darting to the inside along the back straight to try and make up some ground, before being thrown widest of all on the home turn as he attempted to make a challenge. From where he was on the track, Tapit Trice was unable to make any real inroads, keeping on to finish a well-beaten seventh.

Saez's mount went into the Derby on the back of victories in the Tampa Bay Derby and the Blue Grass Stakes, so it was disappointing to see such an uncompetitive performance at Kentucky Downs. Maybe that was due to the exaggerated waiting tactics employed by Saez, or that Tapit Trice simply didn't enjoy being pitched on the inside behind a wall of 17 rivals.

The smaller field here at Belmont will suit. As will this step up in trip - given that his sire has been responsible for several winners of this Classic and his dam's sire finished second in the 2009 running of the Belmont Stakes.

Verdict

Forte is respected, as is the majority of the field. I just feel like there's plenty more to come from Tapit Trice and I'm looking forward to seeing how he deals with this step up in distance.
