Latest on Royal Ascot 2020
The opening day of Royal Ascot 2020 looks unlikely to take place on June 16th if bookmaker Ladbrokes' latest betting market is correct.
Talks are in place to hold the five-day Royal Meeting, one of the biggest events on the British horse racing calendar, behind closed doors between June 16-20.
But Ladbrokes makes it odds on at 4/11 that Royal Ascot will begin on the place date. It is 2/1 that the meeting does start as planned on June 16.
Guy Henderson, Ascot's chief executive said in April: "It may prove possible to run the Royal Ascot races behind closed doors, dependent on Government and public health policy and the approval of the British Horseracing Authority for us to restart racing.
"This would be for the benefit of the industry, our valued partners and suppliers and our television audiences at home and internationally. Planning for this is now our complete focus and we will update on progress as and when we can."
But horse racing in Britain remains postponed with the last meeting having taken place on March 17.
British Horseracing Authority officials have been in talks to bring the sport back behind-closed-doors, with a June 1 date pencilled in for a planned return featuring regional hubs and race meetings.
Four classics which have been postponed during the horse racing ban are likely to take place upon the resumption with the 2,000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas, Derby and Oaks all scheduled to be held behind-closed-doors at Newmarket and Epsom.
But Ladbrokes think Royal Ascot may not take place on the planned June 16 opening date.
