The Germans kicked off the campaign against Hungary on Saturday, and they got off to a fast start in a commanding win.

They raced out to a 4-0 lead after two periods, and scored twice more in the third as they sandwiched the Hungarians’ solitary goal for a 6-1 victory.

It was a fine start for a Germany team who successfully negotiated the group stage last season, only to exit swiftly in the knockout phase.

Germany, who only lost to the United States and Sweden in the group stage, lost 3-1 to eventual finalists Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Kazakhstan Form

Kazakhstan enter this matchup having won their opening game of the Ice Hockey World Championship for the second year in a row.

They downed France this time last year, and on Saturday they got off to a successful start as they edged Denmark 2-1.

They now face their first major test though, as they look to better their showing in the 2024 tournament.

Kazakhstan may have won their opener in 2024, but they went on to win just one more game before being bounced out of the competition at the end of the group stage.

That campaign included an 8-2 blowout defeat when they took on Sunday’s opponents, Germany.
