The USA are tipped to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.

The Americans have rebounded strongly to the surprise loss to Slovakia and they boast firepower that the Czechs simply cannot match.

The USA head into the quarter-finals of the Ice Hockey World Championship having won each of their final four group games.

The Americans, who lost in the semi-finals year ago, got off to a losing start in 2024 as they were beaten 5-2 by Sweden.

They rebounded with a 6-1 demolition, only to then suffer a surprise 5-4 overtime defeat at the hands of Slovakia.

That proved to be the USA’s final loss in the group stage though, as they set themselves on course of the knockout stage with a 5-0 shutout of France and a 4-1 win over Poland.

The Americans then produced their most dominant performance of the tournament so far, beating Kazakhstan 10-1, before wrapping up the group stage with a 6-3 victory over Latvia.

Czech Republic Form

The Czech Republic booked their place in the quarter-finals by winning five of their seven group games.

The Czechs, who bowed out in the quarter-finals a year ago, pulled off an early upset as they beat Finland in their opening game.

They backed that up with a 6-3 victory over Norway, before tasting defeat for the first time as they were beaten 2-1 by Switzerland.

The Czech Republic responded to beat Denmark 7-4, Austria 4-0 and Great Britain 4-1, and that was enough to set up this rematch from last year’s quarter-finals.

The Czechs do go into this game on the back of a defeat though, having lost 4-3 in overtime to Canada in their final group game.

Verdict

USA v Czech Republic

USA have suffered a couple of losses, but they appear to have found their stride over the past few games.

They are scoring plenty of goals and will be brimming with confidence, so we expect them to repeat last year’s quarter-final win over the Czechs.
