The Hurricanes secured their spot in the playoffs by compiling a 47-30-5 record to finish second in the Metropolitan Division, and they made a strong start to the postseason.

They hosted the first two games of the series with the Devils and avoided any early slip-ups with 4-1 and 3-1 victories.

They failed to make it three-in-a-row as they were beaten 3-2 in overtime in New Jersey in Game 3, but they issued an immediate response.

Carolina won 5-2 in their second outing in New Jersey, and then wrapped up the series with a 5-4 overtime victory at home.

Washington enter this series have also made straightforward work of their first-round series.

The Capitals claimed their place in the playoffs by putting together a 51-22-9 record to finish top of the Metropolitan Division, and they raced out of the blocks in the postseason.

They opened the series with back-to-back games at the Capital One Arena and successfully defended the home ice with 3-2 (OT) and 3-1 wins.

Washington's lead was cut to one game as they lost their first road game of the series, 6-3, but just like Carolina, they bounced back emphatically from a Game 3 loss.

The Capitals ran out 5-2 winners in Montreal, before returning home to clinch the series with a 4-1 victory.
