They claimed their place in the playoffs by putting together a 47-30-5 record, and they were able to make straightforward work of New Jersey in the first round.

Carolina made the most of home advantage as they opened with a 4-1 and 3-1 wins, only to then lose 3-2 in overtime in their first road game.

The Hurricanes responded immediately with a 5-2 victory on the road, and they followed that up on home ice with a series-clinching 5-4 overtime win over the Devils.
