This run started with a 4-2 victory at Florida that ended a five-game skid, and they built on that with home wins over Florida, 3-2 in overtime, Boston, 4-1, and Philadelphia, 3-2.

Montreal then beat Nashville 2-1 and Detroit 4-1, only to see their form then collapse as they lost 5-2 to Ottawa, 1-0 to Toronto in overtime and 4-3 to Chicago via a shootout.

The Canadiens did snap that skid in their regular season finale though, as they beat Carolina 4-2.

Washington secured their post in the playoffs by putting together a 51-22-9 record to finish atop the Metropolitan Division.

The Capitals closed out the regular season on an underwhelming run of form though, as they won just four of their final 12 games.

They lost three straight games to end March, but they showed some improvement in early April as they won three of their first five games of the month.

Washington then dropped back-to-back meetings with Columbus, losing 7-0 on the road at 4-1 at home, before avoiding a third straight loss with a 3-1 defeat at the New York Islanders.

The Capitals failed to end the regular season with a victory though, losing 5-2 in Pittsburgh.
