Sharks vs Avalanche Game 3 Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Avalanche are a slight favorite in Game 3 at home after taking Game 2 in San Jose. There is value on another Colorado win at -116 (1.86) after winning their last eight NHL home games including the playoffs with the Sharks losing two of their three playoff road games.

San Jose Sharks Form & Team News

The Sharks had been in fine form, winning four straight games before falling to the Avalanche in Game 2. They had totalled 10 goals in two wins before scoring three in losing Game 2 at home 4-3. The defense was there in the first period not allowing a goal, but that D fell flat in the 2nd period against an energized Colorado top line.

Brent Burns had a great Game 2 even in the loss scoring two goals and assisting on a goal. In the two games in this series Burns has three goals and four assists. Joe Pavelski led San Jose in goals on the season, but he has not played in this series with a head injury as is listed as questionable for this game.

San Jose G Martin Jones gave up three goals on 31 shots in the Game 2 loss and he has given up at least three goals in two of his last three starts. However, Jones’ last three starts have been on home ice and after giving up six goals in his first road start in these playoffs he has only allowed three goals in his last two road starts.

Colorado Avalanche Form & Team News

The Avalanche are in fine form heading home for Game 3, as they have won five of their last six games. In winning their two games at home in their first series against the Western Conference’s top-seed the Calgary Flames they outscored them 9-4.

After being down 1-0 after the first period in Game 2 Colorado took control in the 2nd period outscoring the Sharks 2-0. The Avalanche were 0/2 on the power play and had two fewer shots in the game (34-32), but still got the win.

Four different players lit the lamp for Colorado in the win including Tyson Barrie, who also had two assists, and Matt Calvert notched two assists. Philipp Grubauer stopped 31 of 34 shots in Game 2 and this was after allowing four goals in the Game 1 loss.

Mikko Rantanen leads the Avs in the playoffs with 11 points and five goals and after scoring two goals in each of the last two games of the first-round series win over Calgary he has an assist in each of the games in this series. Nathan MacKinnon leads the club with seven assists in the playoffs and he scored a goal and had an assist in Game 2.

San Jose Sharks vs Colorado Avalanche Head to Head

Including the playoffs, the Sharks had won all four games facing the Avalanche this season before suffering the Game 2 loss. The home team is 36-15 in the last 51 games between these Western Conference rivals.

San Jose Sharks vs Colorado Avalanche Match Up

The Sharks need to get back to playing good defense like they had in the four periods in this series where they only allowed two goals. However, they have given up four goals in the last two periods and look for Colorado to stay hot on the attack on home ice.
