Moto GP

The 500cc class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing is considered to be the blue-ribbon event in motorcycle racing. The sport has been controlled by the International Motorcycling Federation since 1949.

The Moto GP Championships are divided into three classes, Moto GP, Moto 2 and Moto 3. All of the vehicles in these classes use a 4-stroke engine and the Moto GP is the top echelon of the sport.

The major teams Honda and Yamaha have been the top two in recent seasons with the world champion emerging from one of these teams. Spanish riders have dominated the competition since 2012, with Australian Casey Stoner the last non-European to win the World Title in 2011.

Some of the Moto GP legends include Geoff Duke, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Kenny Roberts, Barry Sheene, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Mick Doohan and Valentino Rossi.

Grand Prix Motorcycle bikes are customised for the racing circuit and are unavailable to the general public, with these incredibly fast machines understandably banned from riding on public roads.

The 2018 season comprises of 19 races with 12 in Europe, four in Asia, four in the Americas and one race held in Australia:
