2018 San Marino MotoGP Preview & Betting Tips

The MotoGP returns to the Misano World Circuit in San Marino this weekend after a washout at Silverstone. World Championship favourite Marc Marquez holds a 59-point lead heading into round 13 and will face plenty of competition from local favourite Valentino Rossi.

Marc Marquez

The race standings haven’t changed since the Silverstone washout with Marquez holding a comfortable two race lead over the chasing pack. Marquez finished in second place on the podium in the Austrian MotoGP. Marquez led the race in Austria before being overtaken by Lorenzo with two laps remaining.

The Spanish rider has never recorded a career win in Italy. If he can force a breakthrough at the Misano World Circuit he could hold a three-race lead at the top of the Championship standings with seven rounds remaining.

Valentino Rossi

The Professor has struggled to make an impact on the Championship race this season. Rossi has been without a race victory since his win in Assen in 2017. The Yamaha has consistently been over 2.5 seconds behind Ducati and Honda this season, struggling for straight-line speed.

Rossi lost out to race at Silverstone and a win for the Professor would mark a glorious homecoming for the Professor and Yamaha.

Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo has enjoyed a good record at the Misano circuit, winning in 2007 in the 250 class and claiming three second places in the MotoGP class. The signs are good for Lorenzo to continue his form at a circuit he has enjoyed over the course of his career.

In his last outing in Austria Lorenzo was able to claim a podium finish. A fourth victory for the season will allow him to close the gap on Marquez at the top of the MotoGP standings.

Andrea Dovizioso

The Ducati rider is some way off in the Championship standings and will need a victory in Italy to make up a 130-point gap on Marquez. The Italian claimed his ninth career win in the Czech Republic and will need a similar result at the Misano track.

Dovizioso has never won at home but has the opportunity to move above teammate Jorge Lorenzo with a superior finish.

Maverick Vinales

Vinales has had a tough year but a dry track at Misano will offer him the chance to put in a competitive ride. If Vinales can sneak onto the front row in qualifying then he has a chance of a podium finish in Italy.

Key Statistics

  • Yamaha are the most successful team at Misano with 6 race wins.
  • Marc Marquez featured on the podium 5 times in his last 5 races.
  • Honda have not won at Misano in the last 4 seasons.
  • Jorge Lorenzo is the most successful rider at Misano with 3 wins from 2011 to 2013.
  • Marc Marquez hasn’t had a career win at the Misano circuit.
  • Yamaha’s slump has extended to 21 races this season.
Verdict

The race at Silverstone was washed out to leave Marc Marquez two races clear at the top of the Championship Standings. The Honda rider has finished on the podium nine times from eleven appearances in season 2018.

2017 champion Valentino Rossi remains a sentimental favourite amongst local fans but the Yamaha has struggled for straight-line speed to match the class of Marquez this season. I’m predicting that Marquez will breakthrough this weekend to record his first career victory at the Misano Circuit in San Marino .
