Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has called for more consistency from his players when the Premier League season resumes.

The west London side currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, three points ahead of fifth place Manchester United.

A transfer ban had denied Lampard the opportunity to reinforce his squad in the summer and left him unable to replace Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid, and Chelsea opened their 2019/20 campaign with a harrowing 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford against United.

However, that heavy loss in Manchester proved to be far from foreshadowing, and the fresh-faced Blues recovered quickly, losing just one of their next 11 top-flight fixtures to establish themselves as top-four contenders.

A rocky end to 2019 that included a sequence of five league defeats in eight games threatened to derail Chelsea's pursuit of Champions League qualification.

But, Lampard's side have so far managed to keep just out of reach of the equally inconsistent chasing pack behind them.

While the former England international remains satisfied with his team's progress, he is targeting more improvements and greater consistency.

Speaking to the Football Show on Sky Sports, Lampard said: "I'm always the first to criticise myself and look at what we could have done better. I'm pretty happy with where we are in fourth.

"How can we progress from here? We have youth; we've been searching at times for consistency, which I think can happen with a young team. I'm pretty happy with where we're at but I want a lot more. As a manager, you're never ready to settle."
