2022 Nunthorpe Stakes Result - Highfield Princess wins second Group One in two weeks at York

The withdrawals of both Stradivarius and Trueshan ahead of the Lonsdale Cup dampened the excitement around York racecourse on Friday afternoon. Yet, as the runners in this year's Nunthorpe entered the parade ring, the crowd began to liven up once more.
James Tate's Royal Aclaim had been backed into short-priced favouritism during the build-up. The favourite was fairly weak on the day, though, as money came for four of Royal Aclaim's rivals.
Richard Fahey and Middleham Park had supplemented juvenile, The Platinum Queen into the Nunthorpe and she entered the stalls as the second favourite. Highfield Princess and Khaadem were also well-backed on the day, along with Summer Stakes winner, Flotus.

As the stalls burst open, the first to show was The Platinum Queen, who showed tons of early speed once again. Khaadem was also quickly away down the inside of the track, alongside King George runner-up, Raasel.
Heading into the final two furlongs, The Platinum Queen's inexperience began to show, as Hollie Doyle struggled to keep her on the straight and narrow. Suddenly, Highfield Princess burst out of the pack with a tremendous turn of foot, and quickly put the 2022 Nunthorpe Stakes to bed.
That was a second Group One victory in the space of two weeks for John Quinn's stable star, who won the Prix Maurice de Gheest over six-and-a-half furlongs earlier this month. The Platinum Queen stayed on well enough to finish a fantastic second, as Emaraaty Ana came through to place third ahead of Khaadem.
Beaten favourite Royal Aclaim may have been slightly inconvenienced by her low draw, but there were no real excuses. The best horse on the day ran out an extremely impressive winner.
