Chelsea FC news - Ballack 'wrong' to leave Premier League club

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has admitted he was wrong to leave Stamford Bridge back in 2010.

Ballack, who also enjoyed spells with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen during his playing career, joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 2006, staying in West London until June 2010 when he agreed a two-year contract with former club Bayer.

Now 43, the former Germany international says he was eager to extend his stay at The Bridge, as he enjoyed playing under then-Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti.

"Carlo want me [to stay] but the club made a decision to only give players of that age a one-year contract. I wanted two," Ballack told Sky Sports' Transfer Talk.

"Today, I can say maybe it was wrong. I should have stayed, even for that one year.

"I could never imagine that I would go back to [Bayer] Leverkusen. Until the last day, I actually thought we would find a way at Chelsea. I was really hoping I could stay until the end."
