Birmingham finished the regular season with the joint best record and have won more games than anyone else in the debut USFL season.

The Stallions went 9-1 during the regular season, with their sole defeat coming in the Week 9 ‘dead rubber’ against Houston.

They went 4-0 against teams that made it to the playoffs and one of those wins was against Sunday’s opponents, Philadelphia.

That meeting came back in Week 5 when Birmingham scored 16 unanswered points in the second half to win 30-17.

The victory was part of an eight-game win streak that was eventually ended by a 17-15 loss to Houston.

The Stallions rebounded though to down Tampa Bay 21-18 in their final game of the regular season.

They then followed that up with a 31-17 victory over New Orleans in the South Division Final last weekend.

Philadelphia Stars Form


Philadelphia pulled off an upset win last week to set up this USFL Championship Game showdown with Birmingham.

The Stars made an underwhelming start to the season as they went 2-3 over the first five weeks of the campaign.

However, their offense exploded into life after that, when Case Cookus replaced the injured Bryan Scott at quarterback.

Cookus led Philadelphia on a four-game win streak that saw them average 33.3 points per game.

That run was halted in the regular season finale when they were beaten 26-23 by New Jersey, but they got their revenge a week later when it mattered most.

The two teams were pitted against each other in the North Division Final and it was Philly who came out on top, 19-14.

They blew a 10-point lead to trail with just two minutes to go, but Maurice Alexander’s 87-yard punt return for a touchdown won it for the Stars.
