The Olympics rugby 7's gets underway on Monday 26 July 2021.

Rugby 7’s made its debut at the Olympics four years ago in Rio where Fiji ran out winners. The islanders are favourites again going into this year’s event but will face stiff competition from New Zealand, South Africa, Great Britain and the USA.

The World Rugby 7’s series has been dominated by Fiji, South Africa and New Zealand over the last 10 years. Samoa are the only nation to win the series other than those three since the series began in 1999.

The 2019/20 season saw New Zealand crowned as champions but it was an extremely tight race at the time it was called off due to the pandemic. South Africa finished second and Fiji fourth.

Fiji won the series in 2018/19 while South Africa were crowed champions in 2016/17 and 2017/18.

At the 2016 Olympics Fiji beat New Zealand in the quarter-final while South Africa beat Australia. Great Britain beat South Africa 7-5 in the semi-final but had to settle for silver with Fiji comfortably winning the gold medal match 43-7.

Host nation Japan will hope for a repeat of 2016. Despite not really being a force on the 7’s scene, Japan finished fourth after losing to South Africa in the bronze medal match.
