There has been much talk in recent days about the "second" Main Event of 2020, following a successful series of WSOP Online Bracelet Events just a few months ago.

But the WSOP insist Main Event 2.0 must go ahead and that the $10,000 freezeout taking place over the next few weeks will be the 2020 Main Event, regardless of the outcome of the online series earlier this year.

The winner of the $5,000 WSOP Online Main Event, however, sees things different.

Stoyan Madanzhiev has spoken out in recent days about the decision to go ahead with the Main Event, insisting he is the 2020 champion.

Madanzhiev told PokerNews: "I won it. I received a certificate. It says that I'm the 51st annual World Series of Poker Main Event champion.”

Madanzhiev has posted the certificate on social media – evidence he says that he is the Main Event champion of 2020.
“So this means I'm the Main Event champion. I mean, what else does it mean if it's not that?” he added.

"I am the champion of 2020. They said it."

Poker players and fans are clearly split on whether another WSOP Main Event is needed.

2020 WSOP Main Event FAQs

When is the 2020 World Series of Poker?

The 2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) will be the 51st edition of the event. Originally scheduled to begin on May 26 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June, the WSOP introduced the 2020 World Series of Poker Online, a series of 85 online tournaments, 31 on WSOP.com and 54 on GGPoker. The series started on July 1 and concluded in September.

What is the World Series of Poker?

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a series of poker tournaments held annually in Las Vegas and, since 2004, sponsored by Caesars Entertainment. It dates its origins to 1970, when Benny Binion invited seven of the best-known poker players to the Horseshoe Casino for a single tournament, with a set start and stop time, and a winner determined by a secret ballot of the seven players.

What are the 2020 Main Event Poker Dates?

Play will begin online, with international players starting November 29 on GGPoker and American players December 13 on WSOP.com. Once both tournaments reach the final nine players, a final table will be held live - December 15 at King's Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic for international players, and December 28 at the Rio for American players. The winners of both final tables will then meet in a heads-up match at the Rio on December 30 to determine the champion.
