In this article we’ll take a look at the players who currently sit in the top five spots of the Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of the Year (PoY) ranking. 

2024 ended on a high note for many pros and recreational players. Many well-known names added to their bracelet count while some shipped events during live poker tours and upped their trophy tally. 

Global Poker Index (GPI) is all set to announce the official rankings for 2024 on January 6 but before the winners are announced let us take a look at the points and players who secured the top spots. 

David Coleman

With 4383 points we have David Coleman. This New Jersey resident is not new to competing for the Global Player of the Year ranking. 

A poker player who is a regular in  the circuit, Coleman has over $8 million in total live tournament winnings and sits in the 202 position of the All Time Money List. 

The American pro’s highest cash sits at $890K from the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Paradise 2024 Triton Main Event; Coleman finished 6th. As for PokerGo Tour (PGT) title, Coleman has four  PGT trophies to his credit. 

Jesse Lonis

With 4,374 points in his kitty, Jesse Lonis takes the second position on the PoY ranking. The pro has two PGT titles to his name with the hunt for more titles always on. 

When it comes to live poker, Lonis has close to $14 million in live tournament earnings with the All Time Money List placing him in the 95th spot. Lonis’ best score came when he scooped the WSOP 2023 $50,000 Pot Limit Omaha - High Roller - 8-Handed for a sum of $2,303,017. 


Adrian Mateos

Spain’s Adrian Mateos took the third spot in the PGT PoY ranking with 4,312 points. The pro who’s known to be one of the most revered players in the international poker circuit, had a lucrative 2024 given his record at WSOP and other live series. 

Mateos made two deep runs in WSOP Paradise 2024 in the High Roller ($50K buy-in) and Triton Million ($1 million buy-in) event.

Mateos sits in the 8th position of the All Time Money List with $52,435,051 in live tournament winnings while his best live cash came in the form of $3,292,000. The Spaniard became the runner-up in the $200,000 + $12,000 No Limit Hold'em - 8-Handed (Event #11) of the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Montenegro, Budva (May 2024). Talking about Mateos’ PGT score, he has five titles to his credit.

Tony Lin

GGPoker Team China pro Tony ‘Ren’ Lin has 4,074 to his name. This puts the Chinese player in the fourth position of GPI’s PoY race. The pro who now resides in New York, has close to $14 million in live tournament winnings. 

The All Time Money List has Lin in 96th position with the pro’s biggest live cash coming from the $48,500 + $1,500 No Limit Hold'em - Alpha8 during 2023 World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas for $1,045,781. Coming to Lin’s PGT tally, he has three to his name.

Michael Watson

The Canadian pro Michael Watson scored 4,026 points to be placed fifth in GPI’s PoY race. Watson is a high stakes pro who hasn’t managed to scoop any PGT title but has over $29 million in total live tournament earnings. Watson has three Triton Poker Series titles but none came from No Limit Hold’em games.

The pro sits in the 30th place of the All Time Money List with his biggest live score resting at $1,895,000. Watson nailed this sum during the $150,000 + $9,000 No Limit Hold'em - 8-Handed (Event #9) at the 2024 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Jeju. 

Notables like Natural8 Team Hot member Punnat Punsri, Alex Foxen, Artur Martirosyan, Stephen Chidwick and Dylan Weisman make up for the top 10 positions in the PoY race. Poker fans early await the name of the player who will eventually be crowned as the PGT Player of the Year 2024.
