Will Dominic Raab be the next Tory Leader?

Dominic Raab is one of the current frontrunners to be the next Conservative Party Leader, according to bookmakers.

William Hill make Raab 12/1 in their latest Next Conservative Party Leader Odds market, with only Rishi Sunak and Michael Gove ahead of him.

Of course, there is little to suggest that current leader and prime minister Boris Johnson is on the way out. However, there is always chatter in politics, and the speculation about Mr Johnson’s future – especially in the longer-term – has led to much betting interest in this market.

At time of writing, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is the clear favourite with bookies to be the next leader of the Tory party, with his handling of the economy during the coronavirus pandemic, and schemes such as furlough, going down well with political punters.

Mr Sunak is followed in the betting by Gove, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, then it is Raab, the current Foreign Secretary, who is tied for third-favourite according to the latest odds.

Mr Raab is seen as a controversial figure by many. A leading member of the campaign to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union, he has made a number of contentious statements over the past couple of years.

When he was Brexit secretary, he came in for fierce criticism for saying he "hadn't quite understood" just how reliant the UK was on the Dover-Calais crossing for trading.

Earlier this year, the former lawyer angered Black Lives Matter campaigners by telling a radio station he would only "take the knee" for "the Queen and the Mrs when I asked her to marry me".
Despite a number of various controversies, it is clear that Mr Raab still has a number of supporters, and his position in the latest Tory leader betting is not surprising. He has vast experience, and of course was in charge of running a lot of government business when the prime minister was hospitalised by Covid-19 in April 2020.

The Member of Parliament for Esher and Walton also fronted a number of the daily Downing Street coronavirus briefings earlier in the year.

Will Dominic Raab be the next Prime Minister?

As is the case in the next Conservative leader market, both Rishi Sunak and Michael Gove are ahead of Dominic Raab in the latest Next Prime Minister betting. The Tory trio trail Labour leader Keir Starmer in the betting at time of writing.

Should speculation about Boris Johnson’s future as prime minister intensify, it is likely that Raab’s odds will shorten, although that logic may also apply to some of his colleagues, who according to bookmakers are also potentially in the frame.
