Will Michael Gove be the next Conservative Party Leader?

Michael Gove has been well backed in the latest Next Tory Leader betting and is currently second favourite to be the next Party leader.

Although there is nothing to suggest prime minister Boris Johnson is planning on resigning or being forced out, there has been speculation about how long he will last in the top job, with recent polls revealing that that more people currently believe Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer would do a better job as PM.

That in turn has led to bookmakers seeing plenty of punters placing bets on Mr Johnson’s departure date, and as a result, betting on the next leader of the Conservatives is well underway.

Rishi Sunak is the clear favourite with bookmakers to be the next Tory leader, with the Chancellor of the Exchequer winning a number of admirers throughout 2020 for his handling of the economy during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Sunak is followed in the betting by Gove, who can be backed at 7/1 at time of writing with William Hill in their Next Conservative Leader betting market.

Gove may have his critics, but whereas some cabinet members have taken a backseat for long periods of the pandemic, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster has been visible throughout the year.

Public appearances and television interviews haven’t always gone his way, of course, with his grilling on Sky News over the Dominic Cummings-Barnard Castle fiasco being a perfect example.

More recently, he has taken to social media to acknowledge the criticism aimed at him, and in a more light-hearted moment, he recently tweeted:
Whatever your opinion of Mr Gove is, it is hard to argue about his position in the latest Tory leader betting. He has more experience than the likes of Chancellor Sunak, and of course he has previously attempted to become party leader, standing for the Conservative leadership following Theresa May's resignation in 2019 but ultimately losing out to Boris Johnson.

Its also probably worth noting that Gove also has a longstanding relationship with Cummings, who was a special adviser to him in various roles from 2007–2014, including when he was Education Secretary from 2010-2014.

Will Michael Gove be the next Prime Minister?

Just like the next Tory leader betting, Rishi Sunak is ahead of Michael Gove in the latest Next Prime Minister betting. The Conservative pair trail Sir Keir Starmer at time of writing, with the Labour leader enjoying increasingly positive approval ratings in recent weeks as the government continue to deal with issues such as Brexit trade talks and the pandemic.

Should speculation about Boris Johnson’s future intensify, chances are Gove’s odds will start to shorten, although that may also be the case for some of the other names in the frame.
