Rishi Sunak is comfortably the most popular pick to become the next leader of the Conservative Party, according to the bookmakers.

In what now looks set to be a three-horse race between the former Chancellor, Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss, Ladbrokes have revealed just how popular the trio have been over the past seven days in terms of bets placed.

And while Sunak has drifted out to 7/2 in the betting, he has been the subject of an impressive 43.8% of all bets placed in the last seven days on himself, Mordaunt and Truss.

Mordaunt, the 10/11 favourite for the job, has the backing of 30.9% of punters, while Liz Truss is propping up the trio in the popularity charts at 25.3%.

“This is fast-becoming one of the most interesting leadership races we've seen in recent history,” Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati told FreeTips.com.

“Rishi Sunak was once a clear-favourite to replace Boris Johnson but, while he's since been leapfrogged by both Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss in the betting, punters seemingly remain convinced he's the safest bet.

“They continue to back the former Chancellor in their flurries.”
