Next Prime Minister Odds see Labour leader installed as new favourite

Sir Keir Starmer is favourite to be the next Prime Minister after recently being confirmed as the new Labour Party leader.

Sir Keir is 3/1 at time of writing with Ladbrokes to be the Next Prime Minister, narrowly ahead of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, at 4/1.

In a ballot of party members, trade unionists and other supporters, the lawyer, who led the Crown Prosecution Service before entering politics, beat fellow shadow cabinet member Rebecca Long-Bailey and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy in the three-month race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn.

Sir Keir, who served in Mr Corbyn's top team as shadow Brexit secretary for more than three years, had been the bookmakers' favourite to win the Labour leadership contest since the market opened following Labour's poor showing in the 2019 General Election, and looked likely to win the contest after securing strong early backing from MPs and local Labour branches.

The final weeks of the leadership contest were particularly low key due to the coronavirus pandemic, with campaign events and hustings cancelled.

The announcement itself was also kept low key. A planned special conference to unveil the winner was cancelled, with members instead learning the outcome via e-mail and the media.
Sir Keir, who won the contest in the first round with 56.2% of the vote, called it "the honour and privilege of my life to be elected as Leader of the Labour Party" after taking to Twitter to delivery a speech moments after being confirmed as leader.

Current second favourite Mr Sunak has also been popular in the Next Conservative Leader Betting market.

He was only appointed as Chancellor in February following the resignation of Sajid Javid during a cabinet reshuffle and prior to that appointment had been 250/1 with one bookmaker to be the next Tory leader, but has recently seen his odds slashed to just 6/1 after recently announcing details of his lifeline for the UK economy.

The next United Kingdom general election is scheduled to be held on Thursday, May 2nd 2024, in line with the Fixed-term Parliaments Act. It will be the first general election to be held since the UK withdrew from the EU.

For a general election to happen before May 2024, MPs in the House of Commons would need to vote in favour by a two-thirds supermajority.
