Will Rishi Sunak be the next Conservative Party Leader?

Rishi Sunak is the clear favourite with bookmakers to be the next Tory Party leader.

Mr Sunak was appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020 following the resignation of Sajid Javid during a cabinet reshuffle.

Prior to that appointment he had been 250/1 with one bookmaker to be the next Conservative leader, but at time of writing the Chancellor is just 11/4 with William Hill to be Tory leader after Boris Johnson, clearly ahead of the likes of Michael Gove, Dominic Raab, and Jeremy Hunt in the betting.

As the United Kingdom continues to battle with the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Sunak has won a number of admirers since becoming Chancellor for his handling of the economy.

He recently announced a new wage subsidy scheme, which is designed to replace the successful furlough scheme and will see the government top up the pay of people unable to work full time.

The chancellor has announced the government will pay two-thirds of employees’ salaries who are working in UK businesses required to close by law due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Job Support Scheme is scheduled to begin in November and last for six months, and is designed to stop mass job losses as part of the government's plans to combat a worrying recent rise in coronavirus cases.

The Chancellor has described the scheme, which sees employees’ wages topped up to at least three-quarters of their full-time amount - providing employers bring back workers on a part-time basis - as a "radical new policy" which will " protect as many jobs as possible”.

Providing the measures are deemed a success, it's highly likely that Mr Sunak remains popular with political punters heading into 2021.

Will Rishi Sunak be the next Prime Minister?

While Sunak has been enjoying favourable ratings, bookmakers have cut the odds on Boris Johnson being replaced as Prime Minister as early as this year as his approval ratings continue to fall amid his handling of the pandemic.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer remains the bookmakers' favourite according to the latest Next Prime Minister betting, but only he is ahead of the Chancellor at time of writing, with little between the two in the betting.
