Joe Biden and the Democrats may be favourites with bookmakers according to the latest Arizona Election odds, but there is reason to believe that Donald Trump and the Republicans can defy the odds and hold on here on November 3.

Based on the latest betting, Biden at time of writing has around a 60% implied probability of winning Arizona compared to Trump’s near-40% implied probability. The Democrats are 8/13 with bet365, with the Republicans currently 6/5 to win Arizona.

The forecast with FiveThirtyEight projects that former VP Biden wins Arizona 67 out of every 100 times (Trump 33 out of every 100), while their average of polls puts Biden ahead at around 48.8% vs Trump’s 45.4%.

The Covid-19 pandemic has dominated the conversation in the Grand Canyon State. Around 235,000 people in Arizona have tested positive to date, with close to 6,000 deaths.

Cases are back on the rise after showing signs of levelling off during the summer, and – as has been seen elsewhere – infections as well as deaths are disproportionately affecting older people and people of colour.

Many in those demographics are now turning to Biden, but many Republicans, including a number of strategists, believe the Democratic nominee wouldn’t stand a chance in Arizona if it wasn’t for Covid-19 and Trump’s response to the pandemic.

Its clear that a significant percentage of Arizona voters believe Biden is better suited than Trump to handle the pandemic, but although Biden is ahead in the polls, in recent days there is evidence that the gap is closing, and some experts believes that polls could be undercounting Trump support.

Trump, like Biden, has spent a lot of time on the ground in Arizona. Both he and VP Mike Pence have made several visits to the state over the past six weeks or so, while Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump have each held events in the state since mid-September.

The shifts towards Biden may have been significant, but this isn’t a blue state just yet, and if polls in the coming days even hint that the gap is closing further, you can't completely rule out the Republicans being odds-on to win come Election Day.
