The polls suggest Joe Biden could be on course to win Iowa. The latest Iowa Election odds suggests otherwise.

The polls don’t always get it right, but in search of value, we’re confident backing Biden to win the Hawkeye State, despite what the latest Iowa Election odds say.

At time of writing, the Republicans are favourites to win Iowa at 4/7, with the Democrats 6/4 at Paddy Power. Based on the polling, that looks more than generous.

Of course, Biden doesn’t have an Iowa win in the bag. However, a number of polls have provided more than enough data to suggest that President Trump is going to struggle here on November 3.

Trump won Iowa comfortably in 2016, taking 51.2% of the vote. Hillary Clinton received just 41.7% of the vote, recording the worst performance in Iowa for a Democrat since 1980.

There is no danger of that happening this time around. A New York Times/Siena College poll last week put Biden 46%-43% ahead of Trump.

The former vice president is enjoying good poll ratings ahead of Election Day in a number of demographics, including women, younger voters, and – as seen in other states across the country - white voters with college degrees.

Key to victory in Iowa, however, may end up being his popularity with senior and white voters without college degrees, where he is faring better than in other similarly Republican-leaning states.

That same NYT poll had Biden 49%-42% ahead with voters aged 65+, and although Trump leads among white voters without college degrees, it is only by seven points, 48%-41%.

In addition, a Monmouth University poll released with just over a week until Election Day had Trump leading 48%-47% - a much closer result compared to September, when half of registered voters in the state preferred Trump, and just 44% backed Biden.

Monmouth University forecasting suggests a high turnout would see Biden lead Trump 50%-47%, while another model based on a lower turnout would see Biden increase his advantage over Trump to 51%-36%.

Based on RealClearPolitics’ average of Iowa surveys conducted in the first three weeks of October, Biden leads Trump by 2% in polling, and given that this is a state that has gone back and forth between Republican and Democratic presidential nominees in previous election cycles (Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 being an exception), it may well be that the oddsmakers have priced this up incorrectly.
