Donald Trump won Michigan in 2016 by the narrowest of margins – less than 11,000 votes.

Few believe he will win again here in 2020, and the Trump campaign have been diverting resources to other targets for several weeks now.

At time of writing, the polls have Joe Biden ahead in Michigan by around 6-8%. The Michigan odds may not be the greatest (4/11 at bet365), but even if Trump ends up winning nationally, its hard to see anything other than a win for Biden and the Democrats in this state.

This is surely an Election banker.

Trump’s slim victory four years ago came after Hillary Clinton’s team put all their focus on Detroit when campaigning in the state.

The city is home to only around 7% of the state’s population, and this time around, it seems the Biden team have been much smarter.

The former VP and his team have been engaged throughout Michigan for some time. In fact, Democrats were campaigning here almost as soon as the 2018 midterms ended.

Campaigners have been keen to try and connect with voters over national issues, as well as community issues, for the past two years.

The campaigning has obviously intensified as we approach the Election, but although Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have been in Michigan over the past week or so, the Biden campaign has sent Jill Biden; Kamala Harris, her husband Doug Emhoff, Pete Buttigieg, and even pop star Lizzo to the state to campaign for Biden in recent days.

While the Trump campaign have pulled ads and reduced their spend here, the Democrats’ spending has remained high. Perhaps more importantly, the Biden campaign has been issue-specific, and that looks set to hit home.
