Friedrich Merz is the bookmakers' favourite to be the next German Chancellor.

Angela Merkel has been Chancellor of Germany since 2005 but announced in late 2018 that she would not be running for a fifth term at the federal elections in 2021.

Merkel is also not seeking re-election as leader of the Christian Democratic Union - a post she has held since 2000.

Betting is now well underway on the Next Chancellor of Germany, with Betwinner making Merz the market leader.

Mr Merz is called "the darling of the CDU" by many in Germany, and can be backed at 2.75 at time of writing, ahead of Markus Soeder (3.74) and Armin Laschet (3.74).
