Canberra Raiders vs Brisbane Broncos Predictions

Two out of form sides clash. Canberra are in a form slump with one win in their last eight games and losing four straight at home.

Brisbane have won just 7 of their last 37 games and one of their last 17 away matches. But something has to give and the Raiders are tipped to win by 1-12 points.

  • Canberra Raiders have lost 7 of their last 8 matches.
  • Canberra Raiders have lost their last 4 home games.
  • Canberra Raiders have won the last 2 matches against Brisbane Broncos.
  • Brisbane Broncos have won 1 of their last 17 away games.
  • Brisbane Broncos have conceded an average of 33.7 points per game in their last 17 away matches.

These two sides have met on 52 occasions, with the Broncos racking up 30 victories to the Raiders 21 and one game drawn.

At GIO Stadium, though, the Raiders have the edge with 14 wins in 26 clashes.

In the six games played between these sides since 2016, five of them has seen between 44 and 50 total points scored for the game. Canberra have won their last 2 games against the Broncos. They have only ever won three consecutive games against the Broncos once before (1994-95).

Canberra Raiders Form

The Raiders had a solid start to the season, winning three of their opening four games to sit inside the top 5.

But their form since has been disastrous to say the least. Five straight losses to Penrith Panthers, Parramatta Eels, North Queensland Cowboys, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Newcastle Knights saw them sink down to 12th place.

A hard fought and narrow win over the last placed Canterbury Bulldogs got the Raiders back inside the top 8, but it was a short lived time there.

Back-to-back losses to Melbourne Storm and the Sydney Roosters in their last two games has seen the Raiders drop all the way down to 14th.

Canberra Raiders Team News

The Raiders have a few players returning this weekend – Bailey Simonsson, Joseph Tapine and Semi Valemi.

However they will be without several others, with Ryan James, Corey Horsburgh, Harley Smith-Shields, Jarrod Croker, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and the recently stood down Curtis Scott all out.

For this match, gun five-eighth Jack Wighton will be backing up from State of Origin duties on Wednesday. Simonsson will replace Aekins at fullback and Valemi will cover for the loss of Rapana on the wing.

Matthew Timoko will slot in at centre to replace Scott and Josh Papali’i returns at prop. Emre Guler drops back to the bench.

Brisbane Broncos Form

Brisbane started out looking far more competitive, losing by eight points to Parramatta in Round 1 and then 12 points to the Gold Coast Titans the following week, before belting the Canterbury Bulldogs 24-0.

Thoughts that the Broncos were turning a corner were promptly squashed when they were comfortably beaten by Melbourne Storm, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Parramatta Eels.

They were very competitive against competition leaders Penrith Panthers, yet still lost by eight points. The Broncos beat the Titans in a high scoring game in Round 8 before going down by one point to the North Queensland Cowboys the following week.

Manly Sea Eagles and the St George Illawarra Dragons have both racked up half centuries against the Broncos and the Storm put another 40 points on them. An impressive and unexpected 34-16 win over an injury-plagued Sydney Roosters in Round 11 is their last victory.

Brisbane Broncos Team News

Brisbane has just two players backing up from Origin – Xavier Coates and Payne Haas.

The Broncos produced a shock selection by naming former player Karmichael Hunt at five-eighth. Hunt last played NRL football in 2009, before trying his hand at AFL with the Gold Coast Suns and then rugby union with Queensland and New South Wales.

Herbie Farnworth will move to fullback, Hass will back up from Origin at prop, Flegler shifts to Lock, Copley covers the vacant centre position and Asiata will drop to the bench.

The Broncos are still missing a number of players, most of who will return over the next four weeks. Rhys Kennedy is a week away while Kotoni Staggs and Brodie Croft will be available in a fortnights time.

Anthony Milford and Ben Te’o are a month away while Patrick Carrigan is out for the rest of the year.
