Canberra Raiders vs Gold Coast Titans Preview

This game could very well end up being the highest scoring game of the round with the Raiders averaging 27.8 points per game this season and having scored at least 20 points in all but one of their games so far this year.

The Titans saw a spark in their attack in the 2nd half of their game against Newcastle last week and can contribute to a high-scoring affair.

  • Gold Coast allow an average of 30 pts per game to their opponents.
  • Canberra are ranked 2nd in Average Points scored in the last 5 games, putting on 32 pts per game.
  • Gold Coast have conceded the first try in 3 of their last 4 games.
  • Hudson Young has scored 8 tries in 10 games this season including a double in the matchup with Gold Coast in Round 7.

Head to Head

The Raiders have a 9-1 record against Gold Coast dating back to the start of the 2019 season. In the matchup earlier this year at Cbus, Canberra took a 30-20 victory.

The Titans only win came at GIO stadium in July of 2021. 6 of 10 games including the  two most recent matchups have gone Under the Game Total while the Winning Margin has been 1-12 in 5 straight games. The 5 games prior were all 13+ margins of victory.

Canberra Raiders Form

Sorry, what did you say? The Raiders are 4th on the ladder and still are yet to have their bye? It’s true and it’s wild! Canberra looked to have jumped up in 2nd spot after the first half of their game against the Bulldogs last weekend with 20-0 lead at the break.

What transpired in the 2nd stanza was nothing short of a Bulldogs masterclass as Canberra allowed their opponents to score 32 unanswered points in a 27 minute window.

60% first half possession turned into 29% in the 2nd half, 55% territory in the first half turned into 38% in the 2nd half, 4-0 Linebreaks in the first half turned into 0-8 Linebreaks in the 2nd half. You see where this is going, the Raiders were a completely different team after the break and allowed their opponent to run rampant eventually winning the game.

Thirty missed tackles and 8 errors in a half of footy is going to give your opponent a chance to rip the win from your grasp and that is what happened here.

Gold Coast Titans Form

The Titans shocked themselves last weekend with a 24-20 come from behind victory over the Knights in Newcastle. The win broke a 5 game losing streak for the Titans, lifting them to 15th on the ladder.

Gold Coast turned 68% possession and 60% Territory in the 2nd half into 3 unanswered tries to take the victory which is special considering they are one of the worst teams in 2nd half territory stats this year and one of the worst teams in converting their chances into points.

The Titans have won 3 of 4 games this year when they have scored 24 or more points and have kept their opponent to an average of 12.6 pts in the winning matchups, two though have been against Newcastle, the worst scoring team in the league.

Verdict

The Raiders can go over their team total and that should be enough to put a big enough gap between themselves and the Raiders. Back them to cover the line, something they have done in 8 of the last 10 head to head battles.
