New Zealand Warriors v Canterbury Bulldogs Predictions

Both teams are coming off good wins in round 3 and will be looking to better their 2-1 season record.

The Warriors have dominated the Bulldogs in recent years, especially in New Zealand, a trend that is hard to look past in this one.

The Warriors have been slow starters, allowing early tries to their opposition, but have steadied the ship defensively in their two wins, I see the same thing happening on Sunday at Mt Smart Stadium.

  • Since 2016, the Bulldogs are 1-4 in New Zealand and 0-3 at Mt Smart Stadium.
  • Bulldogs have not won 3 games in a row since the 2019 season, where they won 4-in-a-row once.
  • Warriors average just 14.6 points against in 2023, which makes them the second best defence in the league.
  • The Warriors have allowed a try in the first 10 mins of all 3 games in 2023. Canterbury have scored a try in the first 10 minutes in 2 of 3 games.
  • Bulldogs have allowed a try to the opposing halfback in the first 3 matches of 2023. Shaun Johnson’s last NRL try was against Canterbury.

Head to Head

The Warriors have won their last 4 games against the Bulldogs.

Last time they played in Rd. 22, in 2022, the Warriors defeated the Bulldogs 42-18, of course at Mt Smart Stadium.

New Zealand Warriors Form

The Warriors have impressed as the league's second best defensive side, allowing an average of just 14 points in 2023.

New Zealand are coming into round 4 full of confidence after getting their first win on Australian soil in 14 matches, beating the Cowboys 26-12 and finding themselves 4th on the premiership ladder.

New Zealand Warriors Team News

In what is a big loss for the Warriors, Wayde Egan (concussion) will be sidelined, after being their best performer in the first 3 rounds. Egan will be replaced by Freddy Lussick at hooker.

Mitch Barnett (neck) will also miss Sunday’s game, being replaced by Jackson Ford, who returns after a head knock.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (head knock) takes back his number 1 jersey, sending Taine Tuaupiki back to the reserves.

The Bulldogs have won their last two matches in 2023, against the Melbourne Storm and the Wests Tigers.

Their combinations are beginning to click in attack, although it is taking a little longer to find confidence in each other defensively, not being able to put together a full 80 minutes.

Verdict

The Warriors appear to be a bogey team for the Bulldogs, who don’t take well to the flight over to New Zealand. Their trend of scoring a try in the first 10 minutes can continue, but a Shaun Johnson led New Zealand side will get the 2 points.
