Newcastle Knights vs Parramatta Eels Preview & Betting Tips

The Knights host the Eels in Newcastle in a match that will have little bearing on the top eight. The Knights have been woeful in defence this season and the Eels have the chance to grab their third win of 2018.

Newcastle Knights

Newcastle were lifeless in the 36-16 loss to the Bulldogs in round 16 of the competition. The Knights have been woeful in defence this season and rank last in the competition, after conceding 146 points in their last four games.

The Knights have won one of their last eight games and simply lack the experience in the halves to trouble the glamour clubs in the NRL. The Eels showed plenty of potential against the Dragons and the Knights will struggle to remain competitive for 80 minutes of football.

Parramatta Eels

Eels coach Brad Arthur has persisted with the same side that were able to push the Dragons in a close 20-14 loss prior to the Origin break. While the Eels won’t be playing finals football in 2018 they have plenty of opportunities to shape the top-eight before season’s end.

With the squad unaffected by the Origin break, coach Brad Arthur should have enough scoring options at his disposal to conjure a rare win this season. Jarryd Hayne has enjoyed some outstanding form over the last month, scoring 4 tries in 3 appearances and should enjoy the space on offer from the Knight’s defensive line.

Match Up

Newcastle were able to spring a major surprise on the Eels on their last visit to Sydney, winning 30-4 in week 13 of the competition. The Knights are without playmaker Mitchell Pearce and fullback Kalyn Ponga and will struggle to put points on the board.

The Knights have won one of their last eight games this season and have fallen into 12th place on the NRL table.
The Eels woes have been well-documented this season but they showed plenty of spirit against the Dragons in a 20-14 loss. Parramatta superstar Jarryd Hayne has scored 4 tries in his last 3 games and is good value to get across the line at 2.25.

Key Statistics

  • The Knights have won 1 of their last 8 games.
  • The Knights have conceded 146 points in their last 4 games.
  • The Eels have score 20 or more points in 3 of their last 4 games.
  • Jarryd Hayne has scored 4 tries in his last 3 games for the Eels.

Verdict

The loss of Kalyn Ponga is a massive blow to a Newcastle side that has remained competitive this season. Ponga has been a revelation for the Knights this season with his ability to put points on the scoreboard and break the defensive line.

The Eels were unlucky to lose to go down to the Dragons prior to the Origin break but they seem to be close to turning around their fortunes.

Eels talisman Jarryd Hayne has led the revival for the Eels crossing for four tries in his last three games. We’re confident that Jarryd Hayne will lead the Eels to a rare win this season and continue his recent good form.

Best Bet: Parramatta Eels to win @ 1.80
Tryscorer Tip: Jarryd Hayne anytime tryscorer @ 2.25
