Round 22 of the NRL season begins on Thursday with eight games across the weekend from August 1-4.

It is a weekend where contenders are likely going to stamp some authority, in form teams will climb up the ladder while other teams are going to try and keep their 2024 season alive.

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys

Tigers at Leichardt is always a dangerous prospect, no matter how bad they are going. They showed glimpses against the Warriors last week and didn't give up the fight throughout the game. The Cowboys are sneaky flying and if they keep winning, they are every chance to run top four, and were impressive against the Sharks. But this is the sort of game where an upset could be on the cards and I think the Tigers do get some good ins for their side. The game will be much closer than what the market suggests.

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels

I think this is pretty straight forward with New Zealand. All things equal, they win, but I find team selection very interesting. Shaun Johnson returns from injury and with that, Te Maire Martin is dropped. The two combined haven't worked in 2024 so I think coach Andrew Webster is giving the experienced veteran the keys to the team. Parramatta have been solid without winning and IMO, they beat Melbourne last week if they have Mitch Moses. He's out for the year and so are the Eels IMO.

Dolphins vs Sydney Roosters

Dolphins had plenty of credits in the bank for 2024 but they are starting to give them back. They were 14 up against Penrith, got beat. Last Sunday, they led Gold Coast 14-0 and ended up losing 20-14. This is the sort of game where they could prove to be quite dangerous and I am not sold on the Roosters are a somewhat lucky win over Manly last week. I think Redcliffe will be dangerous.

Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos

The pulse for Brisbane in 2024 is on life support and a loss here, the plug can be pulled. I have no idea what to make of the performance against the Bulldogs last weekend. They were terrible and just outclassed by the Doggies, especially with the attack. They just couldn't hold out the brilliance of Canterbury. On paper, they are just a better team than the Titans, but Gold Coast are showing real ticker in 2024 and were great in their comeback win over Redcliffe. At home, they are hard to beat and with a whisper that AJ Brimson may play, I like the Titans.

Melbourne Storm vs St George Illawarra Dragons

This could be a case of how far when it comes to the Melbourne Storm. They are clear at the top of the table and their 2024 has been quite extraordinary given the injuries they have had. Munster returned last week and was solid enough. He'll be better for the run and at home against a side down on confidence, this could be a complete gap job. But, the Dragons have been quite good this year when bouncing back after a big loss. That said, I can't see them beating Melbourne,

Cronulla Sharks vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

Very tough game to sort out with confidence. The Sharks, to my eye, badly missed Will Kennedy last week against the Cowboys. The good news for them is that he returns from suspension but with that, they lose Ronaldo Mulitano via injury as well as Tommy Hazelton. The Bunnies get Cameron Murray back from his Origin suspension and I reckon they will love his return with his quick play the balls and go forward. That said, they were really poor last week. Hard to tip them.

Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights

Similar to the Storm vs Dragons, this could easily be a case of how far. The jury was a touch out on Penrith after just getting the win over Redcliffe but their Origin guns returned last week against the Dragons, Cleary had the run under the belt, and in the end, it was a complete gap job and a statement. They are the #1 seed for the premiership, comfortably, and the Knights are completely down on confidence.

Best Bet: Panthers -18.5 ($1.85 bet365)

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Canberra Raiders

The Bulldogs are a premiership threat. Their defense is the second best in the comp behind Penrith and if last week is anything to go by, their attack is starting to hum, and that was without Stephen Crichton and Josh Addo-Carr. They both return for the Doggies this week and that spells really bad news for Canberra, who were good against the Bunnies and Josh Papalii plays his 300th game, but I can't see them troubling Canterbury.
