Penrith Panthers are on a long winning run at home, tasted defeat just twice last season and face a North Queensland Cowboys which struggled in the second half of 2020.

The Panthers were crowned minor premiers last season the back of an 18-1-1 season that saw them win 15 in a row to end the season.

That club record winning run was extended to 17 victories when winning finals against Sydney Roosters (29-28) and South Sydney Rabbitohs (20-16).

In the Grand Final against Melbourne Storm, the Panthers trailed 22-0 at half-time and 26-0 shortly after it. But they fell short 26-20 despite 20 unanswered points in the final 35 minutes.

In preparation for the 2021 season, the Panthers defeated Mounties 18-12 and Parramatta Eels 16-6 in trial matches.

Penrith Panthers will be without Brent Naden for the first month of the season through suspension. Scott Sorensen is ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Moses Leota replaces James Tamou in the front row, with Spencer Leniu on the bench as back up.

North Queensland Cowboys Form

A 5-15 record last year saw the Cowboys finish in 14th spot, although it did end with victory over wooden spoonists Brisbane Broncos.

The Cowboys lost 11 of their final 13 matches of the season, which included a golden point victory over St George Illawarra Dragons.

North Queensland warmed up for the new season with a 34-18 victory over rivals Brisbane in their only trial match.

Cowboys have named Josh McGuire on the bench on his return from a hamstring injury.
