Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights Predictions

Penrith Panthers are a winning machine at home and should be much too good for the injury-hit Knights. I'm tipping a routine win by 13+ points and for Penrith to cover a -18.5 alternative handicap to preserve their perfect start to the season.

  • Penrith Panthers are 6-0 for the season for the first time.
  • Penrith Panthers have won 23 of their last 24 matches.
  • Penrith Panthers have won their last 12 matches at BlueBet Stadium.
  • Penrith Panthers have won 6 of their last 8 matches at BlueBet Stadium by 13+ points.
  • Penrith Panthers have won 7 of their last 9 matches against Newcastle Knights.
  • Penrith Panthers have won 4 of their last 5 matches against Newcastle Knights at BlueBet Stadium by 18+ points.
  • Newcastle Knights have lost 3 of their last 4 matches.
  • Newcastle Knights have lost 6 of their last 7 away matches.

Head to Head

Penrith Panthers have won seven of their last nine matches against Newcastle Knights, who have won just once in this contest since 2015.

The other meeting was a 14-14 draw in last year's only clash as the Knights hung on despite being hit by injuries. It was one of only two games the Panthers failed to win during the 2020 regular season.

Penrith Panthers Form

The Panthers are 6-0 for the first time, but the ladder leaders were made to work in a 20-12 win over Brisbane Broncos last week.

Penrith were the shortest priced favourite in NRL history, but they needed a 78th minute Nathan Cleary try to put the contest to bed at Suncorp Stadium.

Effortless wins over North Queensland Cowboys, Canterbury Bulldogs and Manly Sea Eagles are among the six victories this season.

But the Panthers have also toughed it out with home wins over Melbourne Storm, in a rematch of last year's Grand Final, and Canberra Raiders.

The 30-10 win over the Raiders was from as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, but it extend their record winning run at BlueBet Stadium to 12 games.

Penrith Panthers Team News

The Panthers are unchanged from last week's win over the Brisbane Broncos. Paul Momirovski faces the judiciary to be cleared to play with Robert Jennings on standby.

Dylan Edwards and Api Koroisau have been named among the reserves after hand and wrist injuries respectively.

Both are expected to sit this week out and make their returns in Round 8.

Penrith Panthers Team List

1. Stephen Crichton 2. Charlie Staines 3. Paul Momirovski 4. Matt Burton 5. Brian To’o 6. Jarome Luai 7. Nathan Cleary 8. Moses Leota 9. Mitch Kenny 10. James Fisher-Harris 11. Viliame Kikau 12. Newcastle Knights Form

The Knights ended a three-game losing run with a 26-22 win over Cronulla Sharks as Kalyn Ponga crossed the line two minutes from time to win the game.

It was the second try of the game for the in-form fullback and took the Knights to a 3-3 record for the campaign.

Newcastle had recorded wins over the Canterbury Bulldogs and New Zealand Warriors in the opening two weeks of the season.

But, as injuries began to bite, they were beaten by Wests Tigers, St George Illawarra Dragons and Gold Coast Titans, who thumped them by 26 points.

Newcastle Knights Team News

The Knights have lost Hymel Hunt to a hamstring injury with the winger facing a spell on the sidelines.

Hunt's absence means Starford To’a comes into the starting 13. Phoenix Crossland has been named among the reserves after a knee injury.

A hamstring injury keeps Tex Hoy out, while Edrick Lee (foot), Mitchell Pearce (pectoral), Lachlan Fitzgibbon (shoulder), Dom Young (knee) and Jirah Momoisea (Achilles) are all long-term absentees.

Newcastle Knights Team List

1. Kalyn Ponga 2. Starford To’a 3. Enari Tuala 4. Bradman Best 5. Brayden Musgrove 6. Kurt Mann 7. Blake Green 8. David Klemmer 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Daniel Saifiti 11. Tyson Frizell 12. The Panthers underwhelmed a little last week against the Broncos - albeit still winning by eight points. Expect a much better performance back at home, with Penrith by 13+ a safe bet and to cover -18.5 on the alternative handicap a value option.
