Minor premiers Penrith Panthers host the two-time defending champions Sydney Roosters in the first match of the 2020 finals series on Friday. The Panthers finished in first position on the ladder, five points clear of the Storm in second. The Roosters finished in fourth place.

Penrith Panthers Form

The minor premiers have put together one of the strongest seasons in recent memory recording 18 wins, a draw and just the one loss.

The Panthers secured their 15th straight victory last weekend dominating the Canterbury Bulldogs 42-0 and have forgotten what it is like to lose a game.

Penrith Panthers Team News

Fullback Dylan Edwards, centre Stephen Crichton and second-rower Viliame Kikau return to the starting side after being rested last week against the Bulldogs.

Daine Laurie, Matt Burton and Spencer Leniu make way for the returning players, while Tyrone May and Kurt Capewell move to the bench.

Sydney Roosters Form

The back-to-back premiers entered last weekend as one of the hot favourites for the competition. But after going down 60-8 to their arch-rival South Sydney Rabbitohs, it has threatened to derail the Roosters' season.

Not only has no team gone on to win the premiership after conceding 50 or more points in a game, but returning from last week's demolition against a sky high Panthers side looms as one of Trent Robinson’s most important coaching challenges.

Sydney Roosters Team News

Hooker and captain Jake Friend is out (head knock) and will be replaced by Freddy Lussick. Winger Brett Morris, centre Joey Manu, lock Isaac Liu and bench prop Lindsay Collins all return after being rested last week.

Angus Crichton moves back to the bench with Mitch Aubusson, Nat Butcher, Poasa Faamausili and Matt Ikuvalu all missing out.

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters Match Up

Despite playing at Origin level, Nathan Cleary is still a relatively inexperienced halfback at 22 years of age. But off a breakout season, he has stamped himself as arguably the leading half in the game.

On Friday he comes up against Roosters halfback Kyle Flanagan, who has also enjoyed a stellar season. He has never played finals football and enters new territory.

The result of the match could depend on which player stands up the best to the pressure that will be applied this weekend.

Verdict

The Roosters were shocked by the Rabbitohs last weekend and a defeat like that can be extremely hard to come back from. The Panthers are playing extremely well and look extremely hard to topple.
