St George Illawarra Dragons v Cronulla Sharks Predictions

The return of 2022 Dally M winner Nicho Hynes is a massive boost for the Sharks heading into the battle of the Shire. The Sharks have dominated the Dragons the past four seasons and Hynes will give them the organisation to get their season record to 2-2.

William Kennedy has been one of the stand-out players for me to begin 2023 and the return of his number 7 is only going to make him more dangerous, so I'm jumping on him to score anytime at pretty reasonable odds for the tied top try scorer in the NRL.

  • Cronulla have won last 3 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
  • Since 2019, Cronulla are 7-1 against the Dragons, with an average winning margin of 10 points.
  • Cronulla never allowed back-to-back loses in 2022, winning the game following a defeat by an average of 13.5 points.
  • William Kennedy has 4 tries in his last 2 games and 4 tries in his last 4 games against St George Illawarra.

Head to Head

In what is one of the great rivalries of the NRL, the Sharks certainly know how to get the job done against the Dragons, winning seven of the last eight.

Five of the Sharks seven wins over the Dragons, since 2019, have been by six points or more.

Cronulla have won the last five matches against the Dragons, two of those in 2022.

The Saints have impressed to begin 2023, with most punters ruling them out heading into the season and tipping them as wooden spooners.

They came alive around both sides of halftime against the Titans, to put them away.

They then backed it up by pushing Brisbane to the 70th minute before running out of legs around the middle, letting the game slip through their fingers.

Cronulla Sharks Form

Unlike their rivals, the Sharks have had a little bit of a rocky start to 2023, after missing their star halfback, Nicho Hynes for the first 3 games of the year.

They have managed to lose a couple of games where they have been in control for long periods, on the back of uncharacteristic mistakes and soft defence through the middle on their tryline.

Plenty of eyes will be on the Sharks in round 4 to see what difference the return of Dally M winner Hynes will make.

Cronulla Sharks Team News

The long-awaited return of Dally M player of 2022 is upon us, as Nicho Hynes takes the field for the first time in 2023.

Braydon Trindall, who has been one of the Shark’s best in the opening 3 rounds, earns a bench spot, which sees Jack Williams in the reserves.

Verdict

Will Kennedy is going to enjoy running off his old partner in crime Nicho Hynes, and will cause havoc for their Shire rivals. The Sharks are backed to get the job done here, pushing the Dragons further down the ladder, where most expected them to be.
