St George Illawarra Dragons vs Gold Coast Titans Preview

The Dragons have won the last two head to heads and can bring up the hat-trick despite a recent poor run at home at WIN stadium. St George scored two comprehensive victories against the Titans at that venue over the past few seasons.

  • The Dragons have won 2 straight against the Titans at WIN stadium, both by 13+.
  • Both teams rank low in opposition Run Metres and Tackles Inside 20m, chances for points are high.
  • The Titans have allowed fullbacks to score in 2 of 4 games this season and their opposition to score first in 3 of 4 games.
  • Clint Gutherson has scored 5 tries in his last 4 games against the Titans.

Head to Head

These two teams have met on 11 occasions since the beginning of the 2019 season with St George Illawarra taking seven wins to the Titans' four. The Dragons have won 4 of the last 5 including both matchups last season.

The Under has hit in three straight games and eight of the last 11. The Winning margin has finished 1-12 in only one of the last four but leads 6-5 against the larger 13+ margin in the same time span. The May matchup in 2022 finished in a Golden Point victory to the Titans.

The Team that wins outright has covered the line in all 11 games.

St George Illawarra Dragons Form

The Dragons played in the first Golden Point game of the year going down to the Eels in a thriller over the weekend.

The loss puts them at 1-3 on the season with the combination of young core and savvy veterans unable to repeat their winning performance over the Melbourne Storm from the week prior.

St George Illawarra controlled the scoreboard for the majority of the game vs Parramatta despite a 73%-27% disparity in Territory in the 2nd half.

They committed 12 errors in the game aswell as giving away 6 penalties which allowed the Eels to get out of their own end on more than one occasion.

Throughout the start to the season the Dragons have allowed their opponents to make their way up the park at will averaging the worst number for Opposition Territory share in the NRL.

Add to that they rank 16th in opposition tackles inside 20m and it was just a matter of time before a team cracked the code.

Clint Guthersone was once again a standout for his new club with 115 Run Metres, 2 tries, 1 try assist, 3 linebreaks and 2 linebreak assists.

Gold Coast Titans Form

The Titans suffered a setback last weekend going down to the previously winless Dolphins 36-10 at Cbus Stadium.

Gold Coast were on a wave of momentum winning against the Knights and Roosters in consecutive weeks after being belted by the Bulldogs in their Round 2 opening game following the Round 1 bye.

They were outmatched in the middle vs the Dolphins gaining just 1221 Run Metres while allowing 1520. The Territory split was 64-36% in favour of their opponent and despite having 31 tackles inside their opposition 20m they struggled to turn that advantage into points.

David Fifita was kept quiet with just 50 Run Metres but did make 35 tackles. Jayden Campbell and AJ Brimson threatened a few times but were never able to break through for considerable scoreboard pressure.

The Titans rank 7th in average Run Metres but 16th in Linebreaks and 13th in Tackles Inside opposition 20m.

Gold Coast Titans Team News

A bit of musical chairs for the Titans this week with Jojo Fifita returning to the team after being a late withdrawal last week. Philip Sami reverts to his normal centre spot with Beau Fermor taking up his edge spot.

Sam Verrills returns from injury which pushes Chris Randall to lock, replacing Tino Fa’asuamaleaui who is suspended. David Fifita is on the bench with Sean Mullany the other man to miss out.
