Roosters v Rabbitohs Betting Tips & Match Preview

Reigning premiers Sydney Roosters will look to reboot their season from the outset as the NRL season restarts with a clash against South Sydney Rabbitohs at Bankwest Stadium on Friday night.

Before the NRL season was halted by the coronavirus pandemic, the Roosters had started the defence of the flag in the worst possible style - going 0-2. The Rabbitohs are 1-1 but have off-field problems to contend with ahead of the return to action.

Roosters Form & Team News

Roosters would have expected better than defeats in the opening two rounds of the season before the postponement. Defeats to Penrith Panthers (20-14) and Manly Sea Eagles (9-8) were not how the defending champions would have planned things.

They get the chance to put things right from the outset as NRL returns, and they should be up for a big Friday night showdown with South Sydney - particularly with former start Latrell Mitchell in the opposition camp.

The Roosters have captain Boyd Cordner lining up for the first time this season, while Josh Morris is also back for the Chooks in the centres. Brother Brett moves to the wing as a result, but the Roosters will be without Mitchell Aubusson for family reasons.

Roosters line-up: 1. James Tedesco, 2. Daniel Tupou, 3. Josh Morris, 4. Joseph Manu, 5. Brett Morris, 6. Luke Keary, 7. Kyle Flanagan, 8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, 9. Jake Friend, 10. Isaac Liu, 11. Rabbitohs Form & Team News

The Rabbitohs followed an opening round win over Cronulla Sharks (22-18) with a Round 2 defeat at Brisbane Broncos, going down by the same scoreline to sit 1-1 after the opening two rounds.

But things have gone according to plan during the shutdown. Cody Walker begins a two-match suspension for an off-field incident and James Roberts is only fit enough to be among the reserves for Friday night's clash. Mitchell swapped the Roosters for the Rabbitohs after winning the premiership, and now faces his former side.

Rabbitohs line-up: 1. Latrell Mitchell, 2. Dane Gagai, 3. Campbell Graham, 4. Braidon Burns, 5. Alex Johnston, 6. Troy Dargan, 7. Adam Reynolds, 8. Tevita Tatola, 9. Damien Cook, 10. Roosters v Rabbitohs Head to Head

There has been very little to split the two sides in a long and fabled history. This will be the first meeting between the two sides at Bankwest Stadium.

The Rabbitohs won the last regular season match in Round 25 last year with a 16-10 victory, but the Roosters made amends in the qualifying final a week later with a thumping 30-6 victory en route to winning the flag.

Roosters v Rabbitohs Betting Odds

The Roosters are strong favourites with things have settled on the injury front. SportsBetting.com.au make them $1.35 favourites with the Rabbitohs at $3.15 and the line set at 7.5 points.

Roosters v Rabbitohs Match Up

The Roosters have captain Boyd Cordner back and a near fully-fit squad for the season restart and they looked the more settled of the two sides despite that 0-2 start before the break.

The Rabbitohs are in a bit of disarray after Cody Walker's suspension and the loss of James Roberts. Latrell Mitchell was ineffective in the opening two games at full-back for the Bunnies, but will a head to head with one team-mates - and more time on training field - have been a benefit to him in his new role?

Roosters v Rabbitohs Key Stats

  • The Roosters start the season with back-to-back defeats
  • Sydney did win the last meeting with a 30-6 victory in the qualifying final last year
  • This will be the first clash at Bankwest Stadium

Verdict

Cordner returning for the Roosters is huge and they look good for a clear victory over a Rabbitohs side which has made the news for the wrong reasons. Sydney should cover the line comfortably in this one.
