Australia Kangaroos vs New Zealand Kiwis Preview

Australia and New Zealand will clash again for the second week in a row to determine who is the winner of the Pacific Championship.

Who played cat and mouse games last week is a tricky one to determine, but you have to play what you see in front of you in this return match between the Aussies and the Kiwis. I expected more from New Zealand last game, but they failed to deliver, suffering from a lack of creative structure, unable to really harm the Kangaroos’ defensive line.

The Australian team will be considerably stronger with the return of Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Payne Haas and also with the forward depth of Liam Martin coming off the bench as a strike player. I am therefore going to go all in on an Australian whitewash and take them over the 12.5-point line and also over their team total of 26.5 points.

Captain James Tedesco loves these big games, so I am going to jot him down as my anytime tryscorer and first tryscorer in this match, especially considering this may be his last cap for Australia.

  • Australia won by 18 points against New Zealand last weekend.
  • Australia scored 36 points in their last game against New Zealand.
  • Australia has won both Pacific Championship games by more than 12.5 points.

Head to Head

Australia won last week 36-18 against New Zealand, without three of their top-17 forwards.

Australia Form

Australia looked much more polished when they took care of the Kiwis just last week.

A double from Lindsey Collins before half-time put the game out of reach of New Zealand, going in at halftime 18-12 up.

Australia doubled their score in the second half through tries from Dylan Edwards, Ben Hunt and a record breaking Cam Murray, who has scored in his last six for Australia.

Australia Team News

Mal Meninga brought back in the games two best front rowers Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Payne Haas, replacing Tom Flegler and Jake Trbojevic.

Nicho Hynes has also dropped out to 18th-man with Liam Martin returning to the bench.

New Zealand Form

The Kiwis didn’t have an answer for the Australians defence last week and were unable to break through and score when they had their attacking chances.

Most of the stats in this game were pretty even by the standouts were a 6-2 linebreak count to Australia. Also, New Zealand had 28 tackles inside the Kangaroos 20 metres and only broke through three times.

Michael Maguire has opted to field the same team that took a hiding against Australia last week.
