Head to Head

New Zealand won the final of the Pacific Championships last season, beating Australia 30-0 in the most dominant win in the NRL era for the Kiwis.

It was the first time they have held Australia scoreless since a 24-0 victory in the 2005 Tri-Nations series in England.

Australia did win the group stage match 36-18.

Australia have won eight of the past 10 matches against New Zealand, dating back to 2016.

New Zealand Form

The Kiwis are still riding the high of their 30-0 victory over Australia in the final of the 2023 Pacific Championships, getting the first week off in this year's tournament.

New head coach Stacey Jones will have some big shoes to fill after the exit of Michael Macguire and will need to be locked in early with the amount of debutants coming into the side.

Defence will need to be at its peak again for the Kiwis and will be where Jones expects the most out of his side.

New Zealand Team News

It is a new-look Kiwi side to take on Australia in the trans-Tasman test with 5 debutants named in the side.

Keano Kini, Will Warbrick, Phoenix Crossland, Naufahu Whyte and Jordan Riki will all make their test debut for New Zealand.

Also, the other big in for the Kiwis is Shaun Johnson, who comes out of retirement just months after hanging up the puts, answering the SOS from his nation with Jahrome Hughes unavailable.

Australia Form

Australia were flawless defensively in their 18-0 victory over Tonga in week one of the Pacific Championships, however, Mal Meninga will be aiming for more continuity in attack heading into the match against New Zealand.

Australia completed just 24 of 36 sets with the ball and despite winning the territory battle with 63%, they gave up 33 tackles to their opposition inside their 20m because of mistakes in their own end of the field.

With ball in hand the Aussies were strong, especially with Xavier Coates (237m) and Tom Trbojevic (211m) working hard out of their own end giving their team a sublime opportunity to put points on the board.

However, with the new halves pairing of Tom Dearden and Mitch Moses steering the ship, combinations and attacking raids will need time to improve.

Australia Team News

The Kangaroos are unchanged from their 18-0 victory over Tonga with coach Mal Meniga hoping to build chemistry between his starting 17.
