Australia vs Samoa Predictions

Samoa are surprising finalists after upsetting hosts England last week with a Golden Point victory. That is tipped to be their Grand Final and for this one to be a one-sided Australia win.

The Kangaroos flattered to deceive in last week's semi-final arm wrestle with New Zealand. Expect Mal Meninga's side to improve dramatically. I'm backing Australia to cover the handicap and for Josh Addo-Carr to add to his 12-try haul.

  • Australia are the defending World Cup champions.
  • Australia have won their last 17 matches at the Rugby League World Cup.
  • Australia have won by 44+ points in 3 of their last 4 matches.
  • Australia have won both previews matches against Samoa by 26+ points.

Head to Head

Australia and Samoa have met twice before. The Kangaroos won 44-18 in the Four Nations in 2014 before dominating with a 46-0 victory in the 2017 World Cup quarter-finals.

Australia Form

Australia needed to dig deep to come through the semi-finals as they held off Trans Tasman rivals New Zealand 16-14 last week.

It was the first real test the defending champions had faced after coming through the group stages with an aggregate of 192-14 from wins over Fiji 42-8, Scotland 84-0 and Italy 66-6.

In the quarter-final, Mal Meninga's side were equally comfortable as they brushed aside Lebanon 48-4.

Australia Squad & Team News

Squad: Josh Addo-Carr, Matt Burton, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Patrick Carrigan, Daly Cherry-Evans, Nathan Cleary, Lindsay Collins, Reuben Cotter, Angus Crichton, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Campbell Graham, Harry Grant, Valentine Holmes, Ben Hunt, Liam Martin, Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Munster, Cameron Murray, Jeremiah Nanai, Murray Taulagi, James Tedesco, Jake Trbojevic, Jack Wighton, Isaah Yeo.

Samoa Form

Samoa pulled off the upset of the World Cup beaten beating hosts England 27-26 in extra-time after a dramatic draw in London.

It was a dramatic turnaround in fortunes after Samoa had suffered a heavy 60-6 loss to England in their opening game of the group stages.

They progressed to the quarter-finals as runners-up in Group A following victories over Greece 72-4 and France 62-4 to seal second spot.

Against the odds, Samoa then upset the more fancied Tonga side in the quarter-finals as they won 20-18.

Verdict

Australia had to tough it out to get the better of New Zealand in the semi-final. The Kangaroos are backed to do it more comfortably in the final against Samoa, who shocked England in the semis.

Josh Addo-Carr has scored 12 tries and is the leading tryscorer at the World Cup. He is tipped to be amongst the tries in the final.
