State of Origin Game 2 Preview

Queensland lead the series 1-0 but do the trends give New South Wales a chance of levelling this up at the MCG? They have history in the middle game and are backed to take it to a decider.

  • NSW have won 7 of the past 10 Game 2 matches
  • NSW have won both games played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the latest a 22-12 win in 2018.
  • 4 of the past 5 Game Two’s have gone over the Game Total of 37.5 points.
  • Latrell Mitchell has scored 5 tries in his past 5 games for South Sydney.

Head to Head

The 2023 series was won 2-1 by Queensland clinching games 1 & 2 in a dominant fashion. NSW went on to win Game 3 in Sydney to avoid a sweep.

Queensland lead the overall series head to head 24-16 with two series being drawn. Queensland also hold an advantage in overall games won 70-58 with two drawn games.

New South Wales have won the seven of the past 10 Game 2 matches.

Queensland hold a 3-2 record over the Blues in Melbourne, however, NSW have won the past two games at the MCG.

Queensland Maroons Form

Winning the opener was important for the Queenslanders, but if you ask coach Billy Slater there where a lot of things he would have liked his team to do better.

The game plan for both teams goes out the window often when something dramatic like a send off happens in the first 8 minutes of the match.

The Queenlanders attack well down the right side where Joseph Sua’ali’i would have been defending, but what the Maroons great would be referring to is the lack of dominance they had over the Blues despite being a man up.

Expect a more traditional possession and territory game for the Maroons in game two, as they look to control the game in a more dominant fashion.

Queensland Maroons Team News

The most ‘controversial’ change for Billy Slater after his team’s Game One victory is that Selwyn Cobbo has been dropped from the bench with Kurt Capewell coming into the side. The Brisbane centre is carrying an injury that he is taking injections for so Slater is being cautious.

J’Maine Hopgood will also miss Game Two due to an injury he sustained backing up for the Eels after the opener.

Reece Walsh has been named at fullback despite not being available to play a game before the second match of the series. Dane Gagai is named at 18th man and would likely come into the centres with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow moving to fullback if Walsh was unable to play.

New South Wales Blues Form

The first game was an obvious shambles for the Blues with Joseph Sua’ali’i getting sent off in the opening stages.

What you want to take out of the rest of the game is difficult to dissect. The Blues put in a good enough effort and kept the game within reach for a while.

They gave themselves good field position and had some chances, however, they failed to score and lacked direction and creativity in attack.

With 13 guys on the field this can be different and with Madge bringing in more new/old faces into the squad, it will be a different NSW team in Game Two.

New South Wales Blues Team News

Despite the unpredictable and peculiar situation of New South Wales Game One loss Michael Maguire has swung the axe on the Blues side that lost the opener.

Both Sharks Nicho Hynes and Cam McInnes have been dropped, being replaced by Mitch Moses and Cam Murray, who were injured for Game One, but have returned for their clubs over the past couple of weeks.

Joseph Suaalii was obviously suspended for his hit on Reece Walsh and is replaced by danger man Latrell Mitchell. Connor Watson has also been named on the bench with Hudson Young dropping out.

The Blues can tie the series with Latrell Mitchell breaking the game open and scoring a try. Expect a free-flowing game that goes over the 37.5-point Game Total.
