Queensland Maroons vs NSW Blues Game 1 Preview

The Maroons dropped the opening game in Brisbane last year but showed serious resilience to storm back and win the series. Backed by a raucous home crowd and boasting 10 players from that successful campaign, Queensland look well-placed to turn the tables this time around.

Bookmakers have installed NSW as $1.80 favourites, with Queensland out at $2.00. That underdog tag should only fuel the Maroons further, especially with Suncorp expected to be rocking.

  • QLD lost Game 1 at Suncorp last year but won Games 2 & 3 on the road.
  • The team that has scored first has gone on to win in 4 of the last 5 Origin Games.
  • Julia Robinson has been in strong try-scoring form recently, particularly for the Jillaroos, making her a standout option to cross the line.
  • Queensland’s established halves pairing of Ali Brigginshaw and Tarryn Aiken offers far greater cohesion compared to NSW’s makeshift duo, giving the Maroons an edge in game management and attacking execution

Head to Head

NSW hold a 7-5 advantage in State of Origin but it was QLD who won the series last year 2-1.

Four of the last five games have been decided by 10 or fewer points.

Queensland Maroons Form

Queensland come into the 2025 series with 10 players from last year’s winning squad, giving them continuity despite a few big outs.

Several key Maroons, including Julia Robinson, have kept sharp with recent Jillaroos duties, while others have impressed in high-intensity opposed sessions.

The halves combo of Aiken and Brigginshaw remains one of the best in women’s footy giving the Queenslanders the edge in stability and execution heading into the game.

Queensland Maroons Team News

Nellie Doherty Medal winner from last year Shannon Mato is out of the series due to pregnancy Keilee Joseph is promoted to the starting prop role.

Queensland will trot out 4 debutants in the first game of the 2025 Origin series with the wing and centre combination of Jasmine Peters and Rory Owen completely new. Jada Ferguson and Tavarna Papalii will make their debuts off the interchange.

Golden Boot winner Tarryn Aiken has been named at five-eighth partnering veteran Ali Brigginshaw.

Emma Manzelmann, Zahara Temara and Tazmin Rapana are noticeable omissions.

NSW Blues Form

A new coach and a new look squad for the Blues, blending experience with some exciting fresh faces. NSW have 7 players from the NRLW Premiership winning Roosters team, giving them a winning mentality.

There are some key positional changes with Tiana Penitani shifting to five-eighth which adds an element of risk in the big arena of Origin.

Similarly to QLD the Blues have only had a 6 week training block of opposed sessions so cohesion could take time. Their biggest weapon could be raw X-factor if the combinations can click early.

NSW Blues Team News

Both starting props from last year Millie Elliot and Caitlan Johnston-Green will be missing from this series which means the Blues will debut 4 new players in Game 1.

Fullback Abbi Church, winger Jayme Fressard, forward Ellie Johnston and utility Jocelyn Kelleher all named in the 17. There are also a host of players making a comeback to the Origin arena after missing selection over the past 1 or 2 years.

9 players in this Blues side played in the International friendly in Las Vegas earlier this year where the Aussies annihilated England.

Verdict

Take the Maroons to win on the Moneyline as the Underdogs. Julia Robinson is in great tryscoring form, take her to cross for at least one try. The team that has scored first has gone on to win in four of the last five - lock that in as well!
