Griquas vs Western Province Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Griquas host Western Province in a crucial 2019 Currie Cup encounter at Tafel Lager Park. The Griquas sit top of the table with two games to go and victory against Western Province will almost certainly secure a home semi final birth.

Kimberley has been a fortress for Griquas and they are currently unbeaten at home this season. I am tipping them to cover the +8.5 handicap while victory offers superb value at 4.03.

Griquas Form & Team News

Griquas sit pretty at the top of the Currie Cup table with two games to play. Other than the hammering they received in Bloemfontein three weeks ago, the Kimberley-based outfit has been flawless. They had a bye last week but their last match saw them smash the Bulls 37-15 at Loftus Versfeld.

It was a convincing victory and they will be confident going into this home match against Western Province. I see a good return on investment with Griquas as underdogs at 4.03. They are 1.81 to cover the +8.5 handicap which I believe they are solid value for.

Griquas will be keen to remain at the top of the standings and victory over Western Province will go a long way to ensuring they do. With no major injury news Brent Janse van Rensburg should pick his best available side.

The last time Western Province traveled to Tafel Lager Park they were beaten 44-34 in 2017. The Cape Town-based side have failed to cover the +8.5 handicap in three of their last five matches against Griquas in Kimberley.

Western Province Form & Team News

Western Province currently occupies the last playoff spot (fourth) on the Currie Cup table with two matches to play. Their fate is in their own hands but they have two very tough fixtures to finish off the league campaign with.

Last week they hammered the Pumas 45-14 at Newlands in what was an impressive showing from the blue and white stripes. The Pumas are however bottom of the table with only one victory so reading too much into that result would be a risk.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi made his return last week with Western Province but he has left again on international duty. Three other first choice players have departed for the national team in Scarra Ntubeni, Dillyn Lleyds and Wilco Louw. Damian Willemse returns to the side in an attempt to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Playing away to the Griquas is never easy and missing so many players will make it even tougher. I am astonished that Western Province have been made such heavy favourites at 1.27. Backing them would be a huge risk in my opinion.

Griquas vs Western Province Head to Head

Griquas have a solitary win to their name against Western Province over their last nine meetings. They have been more than competitive at home, covering the 8.5 handicap on three occasions which includes a 44-34 victory in 2017.

Their last match Western Province came in 2018 at Newlands where the hosts ran out 38-12.

Griquas vs Western Province Match Up

George Whitehead and Zak Burger will be key to the Griquas performance. Griquas have generally relied on their physical pack to get Whitehead good ball with which he can dictate the match.

Western Province will have to pull it together in Kimberley on Friday. Physically they will need to match their hosts but the loss of players to international duty could curb them.

Griquas vs Western Province Key Statistics

  • Griquas are at the top of the Currie Cup table.
  • Griquas have won 3 of their 4 matches this season.
  • Griquas have won both their home Currie Cup matches this season.
  • Western Province are 4th on the Currie Cup table.
  • Western Province have lost 2 out of 2 away matches in the Currie Cup this season.

Verdict

I am backing the table-topping Griquas to cover the +8.5 handicap at home at 1.81. Western Province have lost three players this week to international duty so there is a real possibility of the Griquas claiming an outright win at 4.03.

Post bet analysis

This always seemed a banker. Griquas are always difficult opponents away from home and immediately felt that the bookmakers gave Griquas too little respect. Jumping on the tip early was key though because once the teams were announced the handicap dropped quite a bit.
