Sharks vs Griquas Predictions

The Sharks should have enough quality to beat Griquas on home soil but the 15 point handicap looks very generous. Griquas have performed admirably over recent weeks and could give the Sharks another scare.

  • Sharks have lost their last 2 Currie Cup matches.
  • Griquas have lost their last 3 matches by 3, 5 & 17 points.
  • Griquas lost their last match to the Sharks by 1 point.

Head to Head

The Sharks have won five of their last six matches against the Griquas in all competitions. The last time they met was in the 2020 Super Rugby Unlocked tournament where the Sharks won 35-34 in Kimberley.

Sharks Form

A couple of weeks ago the Sharks looked dead set to top the Currie Cup table after beating the Bulls 32-19 in Durban. Now they are fourth on the table and face the possibility of not making the playoffs.

After beating the Bulls, the Sharks became favourites to win the Currie Cup after an inconsistent season up to that point. They were playing some good rugby and looked to have the balance right.

Unfortunately they fell apart in losing 27-12 to the Lions and things only got worse from there. Last week they were humiliated 37-10 by the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

This is a must-win match for the Sharks and going by their narrow escape last time out against Griquas, it won’t be easy.

Sharks Injuries & Team News

Sharks head coach Sean Everitt has rung the changes for this match. Change was required after their last two performances.

Aphelele Fassi comes in at fullback for Manie Libbok while Werneer Kok replaces Sbu Nkosi on the wing.

There are four changes in the forward pack. Hooker Fezokhule Mbatha, prop Michael Kumbirai and lock JJ van der Mescht all start in the tight five. In the back row, Tehmbelani Bholi comes in for Dylan Richardson.

Griquas Form

Griquas have endured a torrid season and are winless over the course of Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup. With only seven points they prop of the Currie Cup table.

Strangely enough the Griquas best performance of 2020 came when they suffered a last minute defeat to the Sharks in Kimberley.

Griquas were unfortunate in their Currie Cup opener when they lost 20-17 to the Lions. That match was abandoned after 47 minutes, but the result stood.

Since then they have lost 22-17 at the Pumas and last week Griquas went down 34-17 to Western Province. It was a decent performance by the Kimberley-based outfit but they could not take the opportunities presented to them.

Griquas Injuries & Team News

Griquas have selected an unchanged side to the one that faced Western Province. At fullback James Verity-Amm has been a breakout player this year. He will be the go-to man for the Griquas on attack.
